uTorrent- upload affect download speed? Also, not getting sued tips.

I read a while back that more upload helps download speeds to a certain extent. Is this still true? If not, is it bypassed using something like uSerenity with the DHT(?) setting?

Reason is bring this up is that it seems like you can only get sued for copyright infringement by uploading directly to an officer. If we limit upload as much as possible (on public trackers) then we should decrease our chances of getting caught.

It is true. However, it's not a tracker but a peer's client who adjusts the downloading speed to you depending on your uploading speed to him (to certain extend as you said). Therefore, bypassing a tracker with DHT, local peers, etc. won't help much in terms of speeds in your case.

If you upload a lot, download will suffer. If you download a lot, upload will suffer. This is because of TCP overhead, and you should find an entry about it in your favorite tracker's FAQ or wiki.

The usual recommendation is setting your upload speed to 75 or 80 percent of its maximum. This leaves place for overhead as well as other network activities you may be engaged on (surfing, chatting).

About the second question, get a good ipfilter.dat file and use that. It's not a magical, flawless solution, but it's much better than nothing.

Hmm, the way I read obama's question was "If I limit my upload (preferably close to zero) to reduce a chance that an officer will be downloading from me, will it affect my download speed? In other words - if I give less, does it mean that I can take less also?"

Not necessarily, but if you give more, in leecher-to-leecher connections, you'll receive more as well.

And there are a lot of leechers in public trackers...
