10.*.*.* is local. I expected you to comment on how octets can't go above 255 (while the IP there starts with 292), but you got the subnet thing right, so you get $2.50.

Not really, imho he figured that subnets always have to have the 255 form, which they don't. I would give 1 dollar at most as he was at least in the right location.

    True.

And I take that dollar as taxes.

hehe, i'm not a 'fanboi' of either. the thing is just that for desktop stuff linux is not very usable because all the major apps are missing. and no, the open source apps are no proper replacements so OSX it is (besides other more exotic things).

sorry for hijacking your thread anon

and some on-topic: be careful with those gui ftp servers for windows. some are developed with the dummy user in mind and might lack proper naming of services and may even lack security

Filezilla's a kiddy FTP server? Dude, but if I've already installed it and all.

Jokes apart, I added 192.168.*.* to the IP whitelist. That should be a good measure, considering my router's already preventing packets that I didn't ask for from even reaching my computer and all.

no, i didn't mean any specific app, just something to keep in mind when playing around with those things

oh so you wanna use it for internal transfers only? or do you want to access it from outside?

Correct, I just want to transfer stuff using the LAN, not access my PC from far away. The latter has security implications just like you mentioned, plus my limited upload speed should only be used for seeding my pre-OCH-only era BitTorrent snatches.

I like seeing IPv4 as the only thing installed in my connection's properties.

Windows 7 uses 100% of my CPU when I download file from my netbook at maximum speed. That didn't happen in XP. The issue is there with every FTP client I tried. Anyone else going through the same?

Can't say I have that problem. Everything works smoothly here. The only thing that is capped out is my internet connection, lol

    Then I'm cursed as usual

I've used TCP Optimizer to enable offloading and congestion control, maybe that helps... otherwise, I'll need to find another way to move files over the LAN

Maybe installing Windows 7 on the netbook as well will fix it.

I have to go and get a permanent hardware unlock these days. I thought me installing MicroXP would be a problem, but apparently booting from a "factory reset" flashdrive solves that in 20 minutes.

I actually went to my old school twice to check what's up. And it has changed a lot. Everyone's with their netbook, and there's a WLAN router in every classroom. My generation had to sit near the door and aim wireless devices at the PC room to get minimum signal that'd allow Internets access
