It happened again. I was walking in the street when some guy approached me and asked me for coins, as usual. When I told him I didn't have any, he chit-chatted a bit and walked away. One block later, he comes again and tells me "you're going to give me everything, because my bro is next to you and he has a gun". I don't know about the gun, but indeed his "bro" was there, pushing me around. I tried to stay cool, told him I didn't have anything worth his trouble (a lie bigger than a house - I had my netbook, smartphone and MP3 player on me), and kept on walking, no matter what. They tried to finger my pockets (didn't let them) and take my headphones (whose cable broke when both pulled too hard). In the end I gave them some coins I had and told them "this is everything, it was for the bus ride, congratulations, I don't have shit now". They bought it, let me go, and ran to some dark street, probably to mug someone else.

I don't know how the hell I got away with essentially all my valuables. It was pure luck. And "there's never a cop when you need one" isn't a cliché phrase.

Sorry to hear that man, this city si going straight to hell. Just a tip: if they do have a gun, they will at least flash it; otherwise they are just fucking with you. ALWAYS carry some spare change like a few 2s and 5s in your pocket, so if this happen you would just say "Si loco todo bien, toma" and then proceed to say that's all you got.
Remeber that the majority of this guys look for two things: money and/or valuables to sell quickly (phones, cameras, notebooks, mp3/4) and RESPECT. Yes, most of them feel like outsiders, hated by society and do not only want to get your money, but your fear, to feel superior; so shock them, treat them like they're your friends and do not show your fear.
I've got out of trouble several times just by giving a shocking answer or just handing some spare change.
For instance, one night, in a dark street two guys approached me and asked if I had a cellphone with credit; I just replied "At this time in the month?!?! HAhAHA I wish!!"...they stood there, watching eachother like "what did just happened?".
A few months back, the same thing, 2 guys "hey give us some money", I was with my GF, so I gave them some spare change. They said "give us more, I need to take a cab"; so I laughed, placed my hand in his shoulder and said "come on! im walking and YOU want me to give you money for a cab?hahahah ill take one first!!". They laughed with me and apologized ("todo bien amigo"), we shaked hands and they went their way.
Then the last weekend the same thing, one guy, "I have a gun gimme your money" I saw "the gun" "pointing" through his pocket (it was clearly a finger), but I was with my GF too so I gave him the spare change ($30 approx). He asked ME for my GF's money and I said she had none, we discussed, then he asked for our cellphones, I said we didnt have cellphones, so he tried to grab my bag and I just yelled at him, told him to get the fuck out and cursed him...he went away .
Theres a few more stories but you get the picture.

I noticed that. He said his pal had a gun, but didn't show it or anything. That's how I knew it wasn't true but a scare tactic. I still didn't want to "be a hero", because this is just the second time I've been actually pushed around and robbed (the McDonald's thing was a near-miss) and you never know with these people.

I only had a few coins, to take the bus back home. That part was actually true, it was all I had (as far as cash is concerned) and they were for the bus. Thankfully they took them and ran away with that.

Haha, nice stories. I'll try to keep that in mind. I've actually used the "cab excuse" a few times with random beggars of this kind in the past. Who knows if that saved me or nothing was bound to happen anyway

Pff yeah Tribunales park is a total mess, specially at night. I used to work in Cordoba and Paraguay and sometimes needed to cross that damn place. Always hated it.
If you were going to take the 5 bus, you can use the Cerrito and Cordoba stop (Right across that big bronce fountain)
