    Real Steel

Release Date: October 7, 2011 (conventional theaters and IMAX)
    Studio: Touchstone Pictures, DreamWorks Pictures
    Director: Shawn Levy
    Screenwriter: John Gatins
Starring: Hugh Jackman, Evangeline Lilly, Dakota Goyo, Kevin Durand, Anthony Mackie
    Genre: Action, Drama
    Plot Summary:
A gritty, white-knuckle, action ride set in the near-future, where the sport of boxing has gone hi-tech, "Real Steel" stars Hugh Jackman as Charlie Kenton, a washed-up fighter who lost his chance at a title when 2000-pound, 8-foot-tall steel robots took over the ring. Now nothing but a small-time promoter, Charlie earns just enough money piecing together low-end bots from scrap metal to get from one underground boxing venue to the next. When Charlie hits rock bottom, he reluctantly teams up with his estranged son Max (Dakota Goyo) to build and train a championship contender. As the stakes in the brutal, no-holds-barred arena are raised, Charlie and Max, against all odds, get one last shot at a comeback.

Special effects seems to be ok...I think it would be more a rent it than go out opening night.

notice how they point out perceived inadequacies of the human body (can only take so much, steel never stops,...), preparing the viewer's perception towards future technologies that augment/substitute diverse human capabilities and 'parts' (organs, limbs, senses), creating an illusion how technological advances are the answer to all human problems (payable with money, through consumerism), artificially inflating their 'coolness factor', usefulness, meaning, etc. in a morbid race to (firstly mimic & then) outperform the already perfect (enough) biological system of the human body (and its parts) & that of the mind via artificial 'products' of the technocratic-oriented era (headed by the eugenics-promoting rulers), an attempt to prove how technology is (or will eventually become) superior to biology/psychology/mind, a chronic 'prometheus triumphant' fixation from ancient times

expect dozen upon dozen scenes of robotic mayhem (the accent being on destruction, fighting & disregard for 'life') with a likely very thin story in between

Call me silly but i remember a 80's movie having the exact storyline....allthough in that movie the robots were like 20 feet tall and the battles were awesome, in this one they feel a bit forced....Jackman is usually good in anything and i think it's up to him to keep this movie from falling into the DVD bargain box

Watched it today. Another movie that surprised me. When I first saw the trailer my thoughts were " robots boxing in ring?? Lame", but it proved me wrong. The movie can be funny, emotional and it has good action. I liked it!

i thought it was downright awful, jackman was uninspired, the kid was annoying beyond belief (not to mention unbelievable), the girl was wasted as an under-scripted sidekick, the robots & their moves were lame (cheap boxing most of the time, the rest not nearly as interesting as it should have been), the story & characters were ghastly (selling a child, parental negligence, characters without personal integrity, basically scum of the society), the emotional trickery was pathetic (fake character bonding & personal tribulations, multiple zoom-ins trying to incite excitement as the fighting choreography just wasn't sufficient), all in all, a miserable display of (intentional) scriptwriting incompetence and cheap solutions to mask the obvious lack of anything noteworthy within the movie

for better movies with jackman see:

    Australia (2008)
    The Prestige (2006)
X-Men: The Last Stand (2006) passable
    Van Helsing (2004) passable
    X2 (2003)
    Kate & Leopold (2001)
    Swordfish (2001)
    X-Men (2000)

this director? he can't do much anyways, the only movie he made that was decent enough is probably: The Pink Panther (2006)
