LimeWire Shuts Down After Losing Court Battle With The RIAA

The Gnutella-based download client LimeWire has ceased all its operations after a U.S. federal judge granted a request from the RIAA. Limewire was ordered to disable all functionalities in the current application to prevent users from sharing copyrighted material. The verdict is expected to have an unprecedented impact on the P2P file-sharing landscape.

Limewire is one thing, the network it operates on is another. There are countless alternative clients you can use to connect to Gnutella.

Though I do hope this encourages users to move on to better ways of downloading instead of that piece of crap network.

For us it's no biggie, but the precedent this case sets is worse.

    BitTorrent isn't a network, it's a protocol.

Don't forget one-click hosters also, they're currently my main way of downloading.

    Alien?
That "stupid" network was, long time ago, a well respected one, specially for music, and FYI, this was the 1st decentralized P2P network which is older than 10 years to date and still has a huge userbase. Gnutella was a game changer, because there was no server to shutdown as in Napster, Audiogalaxy and WinMX.
If it wasn't for the unbearable non-stop monitoring it currently faces, Gnutella 1 and 2 will be considered one of the greatest networks. Bigger, oh much bigger than BitTorrent (BTW it is not a "network", it is a protocol, and in my opinion is nothing more than a sophisticated download manager)

    @desodorante:

a well respected one, specially for music,
actually, it was more of an all-rounder, the music crowd was mainly focused on soulseek & co.

Gnutella was a game changer, because there was no server to shutdown as in Napster, Audiogalaxy and WinMX.
only indirectly, also it wouldn't have had such a userbase if the first two hadn't been dismantled and the last one crippled

Bigger, oh much bigger than BitTorrent
not really, at peak popularity in mid 2007. it had 40,5% p2p share as opposed to 28,2% for bittorrent and after 1-2 years the score was 48-78% for bittorrent vs. 2-18% for gnutella (source: wiki references)

BitTorrent ...in my opinion is nothing more than a sophisticated download manager)
that would be called taking things too far

    edit:

also, even though bittorrent is a protocol, it is being used to create multiple networks, thus it can be said that a file-sharing network is based on the bittorrent protocol, which makes it a bittorrent network - the terminology may be somewhat inaccurate but not really incorrect either
