On this 24th of August 2010 we are proud to present you CensorCheap, the first collaborative real time internet censorship database. It will require a lot of users to fill an accurate map but we should start and see the results pretty soon as you citizens of the Internet start to install the Addon and use it to see whereas you encounter censored websites in your daily browsing of the web !

What is CensorCheap ?

CensorCheap is a unique project for us, citizens of all over the world, to a have a mean to fight against censorship of the Internet.

The idea is really simple : by installing a small Firefox (others browsers compatibility to come) addon you'll be informed everytime you try to reach a website that is censored by your ISP or your country.

CensorCheap will compile the data and build a map of censorship all around the world with these data.

How does it work ?

Censorcheap is composed of two separate parts : this website you are currently browsing and a Firefox addon (more browser compatibilities to come) anyone can install to contribute.

The addon will contact CensorCheap's server everytime it encounters a 404 or a no such domain error and ask the server whereas this URL is really down or if it comes from the connexion the visitor is using.

Depending on the answer the visitor will be notified that he tried to access a forbidden website and CensorCheap will save in its database that said URL was blocked at this time.

Using an evolutive equation CensorCheap will allow visitors from all over the world to browse resulting reports by country, search them, get statistics and export generated data to be used in any application you wish.

How to help

Censorcheap is based on the data we receive from all our users accross the world.

Therefore, the more user we have, the more data we'll be able to provide to all of you.

To help it is then really easy : if it's not already done install the addon and start enjoying the web as you used to. It's completly transparent to you most of the time.
