    eMule Newcomer

In recent year, have heard about e-mule but never use. Now with spare time would like to learn more. Can anyone give more info on best way to "dive in" to e-mule use? Best way to cheat obviously good info to have as well :)

If more information needed, I can provide. Thanks you!

The best way to start is reading, so you can understand how it works. I'll suggest you to try the official client or a very lighted mod like emule plus.
I do not recommend you to leech if you really care about the network. The number of people using it is continuosly decreasing because everyone complains about slow downloads.
Truth is, you can use your full download speed if you add enough files and upload what you can. I actually believe leeching in emule is a waste of time. You can get great results by sharing.
    I have a 1.7mb/512kb connection, and I download at 185kb/s while uploading only 24kb/s.
People used to BT don't realize this is a real P2P network, not as BT which I consider as a multi source file transfer tool.
And here( in Argentina) we joke around about how emule resembles socialism, while BT is plain capitalism.
So, in a few words, don't waste you time and the network by leeching. Be smart, read, learn and share.

The issue is not care about network. My upload speed very bad, and sharing makes easier to be busted by feds. I really not sure what content available on E-Mule, so may not even find something download. At now, this more fact finding mission than actual plan.

I've used eMule before and I still do sometimes. What I usually do is download 3 movies at the same time to maximize my bandwidth. I've noticed that the longer I leave the client open and the more I share, the better speeds I get. I haven't tried any other mods other than the official one, Mephisto and ScarAngel but I'm planning to give SB-I mods a try. It has the rarest files I have now just like DC. I've chatted with a plain-bittorrent user and called me lame for still using the older P2P networks. AFAIK, he/she's missing a lot.

    I used to have a 512/128 ADSL connection, and I got a constant 64kb/s dl with 10kb/s ul. That's a nice ratio.
I don't know where you are from, but as long as you set to have obfuscated connections (you can even reject non-obfuscated sources), keep the Ipfilter updated, and avoid fake servers or just use KAD, I don't think you will have a problem.
If you are a bit paranoid like me , you can use P2PFire (check anon's signature...and thank him of course!!). It blocks connections from a blacklist. You can merge PeerGuardian's lists with a regular IPfilter and you will be more than protected.
Besides, BT is not safer than Emule in that aspect, they can easily get your IP and probably MAC address if they want, no matter what network you are in.
And we all remember that mysterious NSAKEY in windows....

Nothing is 100% secure, but I have heard MediaDefender's bots aren't capable of obfuscation nor secure indentification, so that sounds like a good measure.

Fake servers are also a problem. Search the eMule SBI-Leecher thread for a good server list, or if you want to be completely sure, connect to Kad only (although this will decrease your source finding horizon).

If you want to know if the eD2K has a particular file without connecting to the network, a good workaround is using indexes such as FileDonkey.

Mmmm...not anymore. A few years ago, Most files were indexed in the servers, and no one used KAD. Today, servers are almost gone, and people use KAD. So if you use Filedonkey (now called Figator), you will get just a small part of the files present in the network, as it scans the servers, but not KAD (as far as I can tell).
Anon, please correct me if I'm wrong.

Fewer people use e2dk, they use kad instead, this is the fact - for example i search to "Laserdance" - i get very few results (and many fake files...) in e2dk - in kad i get a very large and complete filelist.

So i think emule is still going strong. i love it, for its ability to download rarities - thats what its for.

It's all about which server(s) you connect to...
