VLC for me. For over a decade. Always works like a charme...

The Android version is the best dedicated video player on that platform.

Fun fact: the K-Lite Codec Pack takes its name from the K-Lite Forums, themselves named after an unofficial version of Kazaa which had spyware removed and extra features added. Kazaa is long dead (destroyed by fake files and not being NAT-aware), the forum is now known as FileSharing Talk, and none of the people originally involved with the project are active anymore... but the codec pack still exists almost two decades later

As for me, I'm so old I know why Media Player "Classic" is named thus.

I've been a long time VLC user, but if the contend is 4K it stutters on my old PC. For 4K MPC-HC works much better for me.

I believe at this point of time, top players in the game are MPC-BE/VLC/PotPlayer/MPV/SMPlayer as free and open sources ones. VLC 4 is very late now and I am testing the others to eliminate ones with bad experience.

    Free & Open-Source:

    1) VLC for Android TV: Widely known for its excellent codec support, playing virtually any video format you throw at it. It's free, open-source, and ad-free. The interface can be a bit basic, but its functionality is hard to beat.

    2) MX Player: Another popular choice, offering hardware acceleration for smooth playback, extensive subtitle support, and an online streaming feature. It has a free version with ads, and a paid version without ads and with additional features.

    More Features & Options:

    1) Kodi: More than just a video player, Kodi is a full-fledged media center with features like library management, live TV, add-ons for streaming services, and more. It has a steeper learning curve but offers great customization and flexibility.

    2) Lark Player: A relatively new player that quickly gained popularity for its beautiful interface, HDR support, and Chromecast integration. It has a free version with ads, and a paid version without ads and with additional features like cloud storage.

    3) PlayerXtreme Media Player: Another feature-rich player with 4K HDR support, Chromecast and DLNA integration, and parental controls. It has a free version with limited features, and a paid version with all features unlocked.

Of these, I'd recommend Kodi. The interface was made for this sort of usage, and the addons only make it better. It also has a remote control app for phones.

MX Player is good, and its one big drawback (battery drain) is not a problem here, but I don't think the interface is suited for non-touch usage. If Kodi is so slow, you may want to look into debloating, the User 0 method does not require root.
