    List of open DNS servers

    Link

I'd always suggest OpenDNS, but these should get you out of trouble quickly as well if your ISP's aren't working.

would one be placing any one of these as a Gopher, SSL proxy or just a regular HTTP proxy inside the Network Settings of FF??

Sorry. Never mind what I just texted above. I was thinking of something else.

EDIT; Actually, Ibelieve where I would place them then, is inside NETWORK settings.

Though I find that I wouldn't be able to place any domain preference settings for any one of these as I can enable with OpenDNS such as the settings for adware sites or porn sites, etc,...etc..

    You know what I mean??

That's the advantage of using OpenDNS.

One can enable preference settings for various domains as well as set enable exclusions.

    Nevertheless, a good find, anon.

Yes, that's right - they're just "normal" servers. I prefer OpenDNS too, but thought maybe the list would come handy for some.

You don't need any software. Just your connection's properties page at "Network Connections".

As far as I know ExtraDNS is to cache DNS requests. Windows does that too, although it is flushed when you reboot or "repair" your connection.

Yes, you can add more alternative name servers at Advanced Settings -> DNS.

It appears ExtraDNS persistently caches requests, so that the speed-up is still there after restarting Windows. (XP's own cache is flushed when you do so)

However, having a big and old domain name cache will do more harm than good.
