Anything that is closed source can never be fully trusted, no matter who's behind it or how many awards it's won, simply because only its makers really know what's inside. The ideal encryption solution is open source, has existed for some time and also been audited or at least reviewed.

That's the kind of assurance you want. Don't settle for good enough when it barely takes extra effort to have something better. Of course, good security practices also apply - use a good password and don't leave it written in a post-it note stuck to your monitor.
