Movies from 2017 worth watching - A retrospective

an overview (incl. short comments) of movies from 2017 imo worth watching (may include earlier movies, whose scene bdrips/dvdrips/blurays got released in 2017) - afaik this is 'as good as it gets' this year
movie title format corresponds to imdb nomenclature

    action:
    -

    adventure:
    -

    animated:

Moana (I) (2016) nice animated adventure/musical based on polynesian mythology, make sure to watch it in a (very) good mood

    comedy:

Not Another Teen Movie (2001) hilarious, retro BluRay release
Problem Child (1990) hilarious, retro BluRay release
Problem Child 2 (1991) hilarious, retro BluRay release

    drama:

The Case for Christ (2017) competent drama revolving around new testament research and belief conflicts within a family
Gifted (2017) solid drama, somewhat annoying characters or silly mathematical fanaticism
Megan Leavey (2017) not too bad drama, relationship between a female soldier and her trained dog, still plenty of usa war propaganda

    fantasy:
    -

    fighting:

Birth of the Dragon (2016) very entertaining early bruce lee adventure
Boyka: Undisputed (2016) worthy sequel to Undisputed 2 and 3, top notch b-movie

    horror:

Life (2017/I) pretty good Alien variation
Raw (II) (2016) nasty, perverted french horror, so watch out
The Belko Experiment (2016) decent indie horror, don't expect too much

    other: (documentaries)

Seed: The Untold Story (2016) about seed-saving projects, destruction of seed variety through hybridization and genetic modification experiments; who controls the seeds, controls the food supply
The Putin Interviews (2017) good 4h docu that shows putin's/russian position on many political/military issues, as opposed to getting fed with biased western propaganda on these topics, HDTV release
    - detailed review available at: http://www.sb-innovation.de/showthre...threadid=33353

    romance:
    -

    SF:

Alien: Covenant (2017) not too bad, but not really top notch either, watchable Alien/Prometheus sequel
Arrival (II) (2016) watchable, slow, unconvincing communication, weak attempt at time travel
Passengers (I) (2016) minimalistic, slow, good actor chemistry, no aliens

    thriller:

Unlocked (I) (2017) female bond-lite, watchable, still plenty of usa war propaganda

    western:

Ulzana's Raid (1972) decent late period b. lancaster western, retro BluRay release
Unforgiven (1992) well-known late period western, remastered BluRay release

This list becomes smaller every year

Did you watch Trainspotting 2 and Blade Runner 2049? They're the only movies from this year I'm looking forward to watching as soon as there's a decent copy around. I have The Putin Interviews and Arrival since you and Sazzy recommended them respectively, but haven't watched them yet.

well, most current movies are not particularly recommendable, they seem to be (especially) low on inspired directorial/acting/scriptwriter performance

Trainspotting 2 was a far cry from the first one, basically exploiting its predecessors fame
Blade Runner 2049 is a major title, thus waiting for a bluray/bdrip rls to check it out

Arrival is such a weird movie! I didn't like that much.

That's partially what I was getting at... and your high standards for entertainment don't help the matter either

@slikrapid, did you watch It? I saw it today and it was damn amazing! I couldn't watch the "first" one, cuz it was so boring, but this one is really good?

I also watched Kingsman The Golden Circle, stay away from this one. It's such garbage. If ppl say first one was a big surprise, sequel is not even near it. I stopped watching after 90 minutes into movie!

The first one is very good. You should watch it at least to better understand the second

Trainspotting (1996) was entertaining and funny, with weird characters and situations, despite having a nasty topic of heavy drugs addiction

Blade Runner (1982) i just saw it again after a long time and must say, it will be removed from my archive, there is no incentive for another viewing, parts of the movie were well done (atmosphere, sets, locations, music), but the characters failed to impress, the things they did and the way it was done just isn't worthy revisiting

It took us 21 years to get this sequel to the original, so don't hold your breath

Which version did you have? I have a long director's cut, but I'm not sure it had voiceover narration (which is present in at least one other edition).

sequels are nowadays made at a much faster rate

    Which version did you have?
1hr56m34s DC, afaik no voiceovers, though it makes no difference regarding the conclusion

That's true, as long as they think they can get enough cash from it.

Okay; I want to rewatch it too (as a refresher before the sequel) and was fairly sure my version lasted around 2h30m and had no narration, but I can't find it anywhere now

Leaving that aside, I do remember the plot advancing slowly at several points. It was a decent sci-fi flick (would rate it 7.5/10) and the "tears in rain" scene was particularly powerful, but it's probably best seen as a police story with several sci-fi elements and not the other way around.

Em... did you not see, how much money this one made? Believe me, they're making a sequel.

    Budget $18 million[2][3]
    Box office $41.6 million[3]
That's pretty modest by Hollywood standards. Let's compare it to the latest iteration of Transformers...

    Budget $217–260 million[4][5][6][7]
    Box office $605.4 million[8]
