Movies from 2014 worth watching - A retrospective

an overview (incl. short comments) of movies from 2014 imo worth watching (includes movies from 2013 or earlier, whose scene bdrips/dvdrips got released in 2014) - afaik this is 'as good as it gets' this year

    action:

300: Rise of an Empire (2014) talk about a disastrous sequel, it was so bad that maybe, just maybe it could be worth watching (once)

    adventure:
    -

    animated:

How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014) very good cgi and very annoying rest of it (one hiccup after another)
Mr. Peabody & Sherman (2014) watchable but loses 'bark' towards the finale, good voice-acting, kinda cheap jokes - they weren't funny, sherman!

    comedy:
    -

    drama:

Chef (2014) ok-ish indie with a positive vibe, lots of cooking & traveling
Dallas Buyers Club (2013) pretty good/convincing drama on alternative ways of AIDS treatment, commendable acting by mcconaughey & leto
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013) feels like a quirky indie, mitty actually promoting himself (the cover) & overstating the events (adventures), mildly entertaining, but probably only good for one viewing or so
The Wolf Of Wall Street (2013) exaggerated/unbelievable/loud goodfellas wannabe (with plenty of parties & hangovers ofc)

    fantasy:
    -

    fighting:
    -

    horror:

Deliver Us from Evil (2014) very good atmosphere & good acting but the rest was not really satisfactory
Oculus (I) (2013) low-key old-school psychological thriller/horror that surprisingly works, the negative: little gore, little action, relatively tame
The Babadook (2014) pretty good psychological horror, somewhat clumsy finale, very good acting

    other:

Fed Up (2014) documentary on obesity/fat/sugar/processed foods connection
Gasland Part II (2013) documentary on the impacts/future of fracking in usa/world
Genetic Roulette: The Gamble of our Lives (2012) documentary on the methodoogy & impacts of GM food/technology

    romance:

The Fault In Our Stars (2014) not too bad YA romance but the other side of the story is just cancerous/depressive, promising main actress - for more YA romance though with dystopian themes see Divergent (2014) or The Giver (2014), but don't expect too much

    SF:

Edge of Tomorrow (2014) seems cruise can still make a good movie, wait till the first battle when the movie takes it to the next level
Godzilla (2014) this one is mentioned for teh lulz, as it could be called 'the most debated movie of the year' on sbi
Gravity (2013) the future of cinema? over 90% of cgi and a few human actors with only their faces plastered on the screen (the rest made by stunts & motion-capture artists) - expect very nice outdoors/space visuals/cgi & floating camera-work, otherwise mildy enjoyable, highly unbelievable, with an extremely simplistic/repetitive story & not very interesting characters
Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014) another one just for some of the top-notch cgi & some funny stuff, otherwise a very average movie

    thriller:

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014) watch it only for the unique style

    western:
    -

    @ zizo22:

all of these are on my 'to watch' list, only the first two have already been released (as bdrips/dvdrips)

in addition to the above, these may also enter the list (and thus conclude the 2014 selection):

    drama:

Get On Up (2014) ok-ish movie about the one who lived for the funk/soul music, james brown - most entertaining part: music related stuff

    horror:

Tusk (2014) human centipede reinvented in an attempt at comedy, had potential, gets boring after a while with weak jokes and too much dialogue, gets extra points for the weird final transformation though

    SF:

Predestination (2014) interesting take on time travel but rather low on budget & with many errors in logic

    thriller:

The Equalizer (2014) denzel finally makes a solid action movie after a long time, the second half has some problems with partially satisfactory action scenes though, and gramps is a bit old too, no?
