Firefox Hits 35% Market Share In Europe, 22% Globally

Analysis – Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 8 has been available for 18 days and remains the company’s weakest web browser at launch since version 3. While the software now seems to be close to 4% market share, it appears to be unable to stop the bleeding of other IE versions. Since the beginning of the year, Mozilla’s Firefox has picked up more than half of the users IE lost; the other half went to Apple’s Safari and Google’s Chrome. This trend is evident in new market share numbers published by Net Applications and StatCounter, which show that Firefox hit a new record market share in March.

First Look: Mozilla Firefox FX 3.6 Alpha 1

Chicago (IL) - Although Firefox 3.5 (formerly Firefox 3.1) is still in beta, Mozilla is already developing Firefox 3.6 code-named Namoroka (a Madagascar national park.) Slated for an early-to-mid 2010 release, the browser will be marketed as Firefox.next (FX) moniker in a nod to new technologies set to take Firefox to the next level. Speed remains the paramount focus, especially in terms of user interface improvemens, startup time and tab handling. There is also a better integration with the host OS and web apps, new personalization and customization features, souped up tabs management. An all-new tasks-based navigation should keep feature-hungry users happy. The first nightly build that dropped late last week provides us with an early glimpse of exciting FX improvements.

Some of the additions on FX are:

tab preview when pressing Ctrl+Tab
some improvements in the Bookmark system
a new layout for the "Clear Private Data" - now it's called "Clear Recent History" and lets you delete traces from a particular time range rather than everything

Memory usage is quite good for an alpha. It scores 94/100 on the Acid3 test.

Introducing the Firefox Taskfox Prototype

The Firefox Superbar is about to be kicked to the next level with the integration of Ubiquity. Right now all that is available from Mozilla is the Taskfox Prototype, an illustration of what Ubiquity blended into Firefox's fabric would look like to the end user. Of course, you can watch the video embedded at the bottom of this article in order to get a perspective over Taskfox for Mozilla's open-source browser. Taskfox is essentially a feature Mozilla plans for Firefox, and which was inspired by the ubiquity experiment.

What a stupid move by Giorgio Maone... :stupid:

War breaks out between AdBlock Plus and NoScript

A quiet war has broken out between the authors of AdBlock Plus and NoScript and money is on the table. Both are trying to outdo each other by disabling each other's functionality.

The issue at stake is NoScript's behaviour of showing a change log window whenever it gets a new update, which of late has been updated rather frequently. And unsurprisingly, that change log window is filled with ads that generate revenue for NoScript.

AdBlock Plus on the other hand is committed to blocking ads regardless of where they are from; and this has stepped on the tail of the author of NoScript.

Disclosed in the blog (http://adblockplus.org/blog/attention-noscript-users) of the author of AdBlock Plus are tales of deception, manipulation and trickery by NoScript, designed to subject it's users to it's ads and the race by each side to block and disable each other's technological defences.

Source (http://www.neowin.net/news/main/09/05/02/war-between-adblock-plus-and-noscript-money-on-the-table)

The fix, facts and apologies here:

IMPORTANT UPDATE FOR ADBLOCK PLUS USERS: NoScript 1.9.2.6 automatically and permanently removes the controversial "NoScript Development Support Filterset", with no questions asked.

Not including a prompt asking for permission beforehand from the start has been a very wrong thing to do, and I want all the ABP users who felt betrayed to know how much I'm sorry for that. As a sign of good will, current NoScript 1.9.2.6 completely removes the filterset itself, if found there, on startup with no questions asked. Thanks for your patience.

Thanks for the news. Automatically unblocking its own ads isn't indeed a good move from NoScript's developers.

Firefox/Namoroka

After Firefox3.5 ("Shiretoko") is released, the next version of Firefox will be developed under the project name "Namoroka". The version number will be initially set to "3.6", but this should not be considered final, and as such the project may also be referred to as "Firefox.next".

Firefox 3.5 eyed for Tuesday release

Mozilla is expected to release its Firefox 3.5 browser on Tuesday morning, a company representative said on Friday afternoon.

A key feature of the browser is the TraceMonkey JavaScript engine, which boosts performance and stability. Indeed, speed has been stressed as a key attraction of the upgrade.

A Private Browsing Model is highlighted as well, for control of private data. HTML 5 capabilities are included in such areas as encoded video.

Firefox gets accelerometer support

Mozilla's Doug Turner announced that support for accelerometers has landed to Firefox's main development repository, the trunk.

For those unfamiliar, an acceloremeter is a cool little device that comes in several consumer devices including the MacBook Pro, iPhones, and other cell phones that tell the operating system the current device orientation and movement enabling some interesting applications, particularly in gaming: imagine a bowling or racing web app where you drive by moving your mobile device.
