:confused:Hi--

I've heard and read so many conflicting reports of the effectiveness/idiocy of using registry cleaners that I'm quite confused. Should one Be used? If so, which one do you recommend? Thanks!

I can recommend CCleaner's built-in cleaner, or if you want a dedicated tool, Glarysoft's Registry Cleaner, which is also free. :top:

I use ccleaner and never have any problem with it so I can recommend it (I run XP 32 and in the past vista 64 and it work with both)

I've used Registry First Aid for years without incident, and with noticeable benefits.

if you use such cleaner don't forget to backup the registry before doing anything so you can restore it if something bad happened to the system and it's better to manually select which "fixes" applied to the registry and not doing it automatically

ERUNT (http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/) for the win. :top:

Glarysoft's registry cleaner also has an option to backup and restore registry keys it has deleted.

+1 vote for JV16 Power Tools

Very flexible accurate reg cleaner, picks up keys other reg cleaners miss, has backup and restore option too.

I didn't use any of these and my windows is still fast.
In 90% these tools destroy the windowsinstallation and programs won't work, but the speedup is 0%.

If you system is completely wasted by software you better should make a clean install.

i don't think this kind of utilities were used to speed up the system. they do delete invalid registry entries or remove unused entries from old uninstalled applications or dlls

defragmenting your drive and also your registry are still the best way to increase the performance of your system responses without adding more hardware resources

With PageDefrag (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897426.aspx) you can defragment the drive space registry files use to improve read times at least a bit (just like with any other defragged file).

Furthermore, NTREGOPT (http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/) can make login times noticeably decrease by removing blank, unneeded chunks of space from the registry hives without otherwise altering their contents.

two nice utilities that i also use, too bad my system rarely boots and i'm too lazy to take advantage of this lol

all sysinternals utils are very useful imo

I don't like rebooting either, so when one of these tools requires me to do so, I usually delay running it until a few minutes before shutting down and going to sleep.
