View Full Version : IE8 and the privacy...

That's what I've found today about the new IE8 and its new feature called "Suggested Sites", similar to the function in Google new browser Chrome, where the advertisement is adjusted to your recently browsed internet pages.
But positive to mention though is that in the IE 8 "Suggested Sites" is disabled by default, so that a privacy leak already isn't created after installing the browser.

However, MS denied the direct comparison with Google Sugguest and did appeasement:

She used that to argue there was a difference between what Microsoft and Google logged in their browsers. "Suggested Sites is connected to the browser's history, and it's not looking at each of the keystrokes," she said. "IE only captures the URL as it is navigated [to], when that URL goes into your history." Nor does Suggested Sites log and transmit cookies to Microsoft's servers, as does Google Suggest. "The data we log is actually pretty innocuous," Richardson said.

Well, now IE8 climbed up to the new call-home "trend" -_-
At least it's disabled by default.

as soon as someone implements a new feature (no matter if useful or not) MS doesn't hesitate to built it in the next version too...
really thought MS would do better than all the others now because of the higher priority of the IE..

Yes:
FF has tabs and RSS -> IE7 implements them.
Opera has "speed dial" -> IE7 adds "quick tabs" in the next update...

I'd bother to make the browser get a decent score in the Acid3 test instead... which MS has stated not to really care about, by the way.

didn't know that.. but only another imitation... :frown:
(too bad that opera cant show more than 9 speed dials.. maybe IE will)

yeah a higher scoring would be desirable but i think i read somewhere in the net that MS tried to think in that ways too.. (maybe i'll find it in the history...or was it an opera newspost:confused2: lol :rolleyes2:)

It probably will... if Opera does :S

Here it is:

Chris Wilson [MS] (Expert):
Q: What do you guys think of the Acid-tests, especially Acid3? Is it your goal to let IE 8 pass Acid3?
A: Alex, The ACID3 test is a collection of interesting tests, spread across a large set of standards. Some of those standards will see improvements in IE8 - in fact, IE8 already improves on IE7's score - but we are focused on the most important features and standards to make web developers' lives easier. The ACID3 test does not map directly to that goal.

I think they're just burying themselves by openly stating not to actively pursue adding/improving support for the Web standards Acid3 tests for

lol yeah right, i forgot for a moment we're talking about MS:biggrin:

Here it is:
ah thx, you just saved me a lot of searching for that!:top:

yes you're right but all the other browsers dont have the focus on acid3 too..:frown:
in the priority list, other things are more important for them..

mportant features and standards to make web developers' lives easier
actually kind of paradox because if it would score the 100 points in acid3 ,meaning all web standards are supported, it would help the deveopers most...

They could be a bit more creative about this

Seen it at Wikipedia while I looked through the IE8 article as I installed the browser itself  (in my test Windows )

Yes, nobody knows what's in MS's mind

I looked through the IE8 article as I installed the browser itself
and whats your opinion about the IE8?
are there any main difference you experienced so far, compared to the IE7?
(look & feel, performance, or new security options?)

Well, I don't know... its UI is pretty much the same as IE7's, but there are of course a lot of changes under the hood.

The "InPrivate" feature lets you browse without leaving traces (porn mode ) in the local computer, like Chrome's Incognito.

WebSlices, well... they already tried and failed with Active Desktop... what's the sense of opening a small window to show a site if you can simply open it in a new page? Both distract you as much from the original site you were reading anyway.

Asking you to re-open the tabs you were visiting after a crash is very good, but it's been implemented a bit late (FF and Opera already had it...). Plus, all this time, having IE6 (if unable to use anything else ) crash with 20+ windows open (and closed :mad2:) at the same time was/is frustrating.

"Search suggestions"... I know what I'm looking for!

Its new/updated phishing filter is also good for users that are just starting, but once you become experimented and know companies, sites,... will never ask you for your password or account information, it's just easier to turn it off and save resources and yourself from seeing warnings.

Overall it'd be pretty good, but let's not forget the big RAM usage per tab process! :eek3:
Although Microsoft must have addressed this in IE8 beta 2, which I have yet to try...

thanks for the big opinion about IE8 aka "ram eater"
before i read your article i really thought about updating my IE 7 without using a sandbox or anything comparable...
now i think i will just leave out the beta and wait for the final... lol

since i have only around 800mb ram left when i'm in idle mode i dont wanna try out using the IE and running an app besides...:stupid:

but im really excited about the porn mode  (great name :top:)
cause that way i dont have to set up my opera that way as i did with the 9.52 now... saves a lot of time :rolleyes2:

Thanks :top:
BTW, now you mentioned sandboxes: IE8 doesn't work inside one; you have to let it overwrite your previous version of IE and leave registry traces that won't be deleted even after uninstallation... My guess is that if someone/thing put IE8 in my PC right now, I'd have to reinstall Windows.
And Beta 2 is out and available here (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/beta/default.aspx) for those that want to test it (inside a VM ).

Yes, two IE8 tabs can't take more RAM than what Opera is using right now here to render 15 tabs instead, it's just stupid...

Well, you know, it's the first thing that springs to mind

when i sat at the dentist today, i read an article about chrome. in that article i saw a quotation from an expert that says: "I can't understand the fact that people have the mentalitY of thinking that all products are freely available on the internet. you'll pay for everything, even if its "just" your privacy..."

fits very well to our topic i think:rolleyes2:

He has a point there. But it shouldn't be that way, privacy should be a right, not a privilege (this sounded so much like VPN services' advertising but it's true)...
