Google is a great tool to compare the popularity of searches in a similar niche. When the number of people searching for something goes up, it is often a sign of increased popularity. We take a look at the search volume for three popular BitTorrent clients, how this changed over time, and how it differs worldwide.

...

The graph clearly shows that Azureus was the most searched for client until the beginning of 2007, followed by BitComet. From then on, uTorrent took over and it continued to grow while BitComet and Azureus searches slowly decreased. Search statistics are of course only an indirect measure of the popularity of a BitTorrent client, but the graphs seem to follow the same pattern as actual usage statistics which we have reported before.

Look at this webpage from my own country:

Google Insights for Search (http://www.google.com/insights/search/#cat=&q=utorrent%2Cazureus%2Cbitcomet&geo=CA&date=&clp=&cmpt=q)

By the life of me. The Newfies have more regional interest in uT than the rest of my fellow canucks.

I am so ashamed to be in the lowest ranking province to use uT. :frown:

LOL:biggrin:

Interesting find, Anon.

Well, honestly speaking,I was a BitComet addict at the begining when I knew about what so called "Bittorrent Service" then I found about Azureus/uT & liked the options/UI,everything was cool back then till now !~!

Thanks, SL

And yes, I think that BC was by far the most used client until uTorrent and all its lightweight arrived to the BitTorrent world  I mean, when looking at peerlists, you mostly saw BC clients. Then uT was released, and you saw a handful of these clients every now and then. After that, it got popular - remember the first uT versions were less than 90 KB in size (the latest v1.8 is 261K) so this and its UI's simplicity, while being able to reach very good speeds, contributed to its widespread popularity... it's the kind of software that does one thing and does it well.
And now, peerlists are like UT, UT, UT, UT, Azureus (hack ), etc...

{evil laugh}

That's exactly why a lot of people "still" use uT 1.6.1.

I remember I used to use uT version 1.6.1 {Sarmin MOd}. It was pretty good. Just haven't used it in quite awhile.

Use the current mods of uT cuz most trackers want the newest version to be used.

but not all. Some still allow the usage of 1.6.1. Thats good.

I've been using the google trends service they used in the article for quite a while and it's really fun:
Google Trends: azureus, utorrent, bitcomet (http://www.google.com/trends?q=azureus%2C+utorrent%2C+bitcomet)

But it's addicting and gets me in trouble...
Google Trends: anal fisting, horse porn (http://www.google.com/trends?q=anal+fisting%2C+horse+porn&ctab=0&geo=all&date=all&sort=0)

WHAT HAPPENED IN PRAGUE OF JANUARY '06? I MUST KNOW.

And some others still have all versions higher than 1.6.1 banned

@Nobody: after checking that link, I thought the same... maybe Google started indexing more sites of that kind after 2006 or something :eek3:

LOL yeah but still uT is very lightweight resources client compared to other BT Clients, but it got a bit bigger than older versions yeah, and this is a point that makes ya worry about furture releases :confused2: hope it doesn't get like Azy with those 20MB+ installation directory & all those resources wasting plugins

Yes, of course 260KB is still extremely small for a fully-featured BitTorrent client

hmmm, compared with other BT client, sure thing yeah !! but still got a bit bigger than older versions,so hope they don't boost it up more than that

More features will almost always equal a bigger EXE, unless they rewrite or remove old code to use less space. Anyway, it'll surely take a long time before uTorrent's [packed] executable even reaches 500KB

v1.7.7 unpacked = 462KB
v1.8 stable unpacked = 562 KB
