Microsoft Corp. re-released one of its Aug. 11 security updates yesterday, explaining that it had posted an incomplete version to its own download center last week.

The admission was the third time in the past two months that Microsoft has had to re-issue a security-related update.

Users who manually downloaded MS08-051 since Aug. 12 to patch Office 2003 should obtain the second version as soon as possible, Microsoft said. People who obtained the update via Windows Update or through their company's Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) server, or who updated other versions of Office, do not need to reinstall MS08-051.

That update patched three vulnerabilities in PowerPoint, the presentation maker included with Microsoft Office, including one that Microsoft labeled "critical," its highest ranking. MS08-051 was one of 11 security bulletins released last week that patched 26 bugs, the most Microsoft has tackled in a single month for the last year and a half.

So it's probably better if MS says it themselves, rather than someone from the "competition"

@anon: they just seem not to care anymore, they depend on their world wide fame which took lots of work back then before those Competitors even existed :klatsch_3:

And it all started with a CP/M clone

looks so way binary to me !! never ever used such an OS before (surely RAM handling part sux big time,no big stix were found back then LOL)

I once got my hands into what you'd call the typical system running Win 1.0.
It was a 80386 and its amount of installed RAM -1MB- was measured in KBs (640kb base, 384 XMS) :eek3:

Aurion

damn, this is so hard to find already tho !! it's just would it run on a modern system as we have nowaday ??

anon
30.08.08, 00:12
Mhm, not really. It needs an old version of DOS to boot, which itself can only run from a floppy disk of very little capacity (like 300kb or so). And even if it you were able to make it work despite this, it'd probably go out of sync with our current 4-digit clock speeds and huge RAM amounts. :frown:
In short: probably only inside a VM

Aurion

the huge amounts of RAM I would agree on the most tho !! Anyway, who give a damn about a lousey old OS like that (no offense)

anon

Yes, maybe a lot of people "still" use Win3.11 and the such, but I don't think anybody uses Windows 1.0 by now

Aurion

that is stoneage anon LOL stoneage BIG time

anon

Indeed

The oldest Windows I ever got to run in my PC is Win3.1, in a FAT32 drive and after patching some files. If I had got working drivers for my network card, it'd have been pretty much usable: graphic, sound and other stuff was working.

I have also tested NT 3.51 in a VM. After setting it up correctly and installing all drivers, it could even access the Internet using IE3. I entered SB-I from there and even made a post

damn a less than 1MB file size making the whole OS's directory gets up to 2MB max ?? damn, this is was a real STONEAGE guys,I couldn't believe that we actually had that OS in hand back then & lots of ppl actually worked with it for a couple of years till a bit modern version of Win OS came out

I miss the Win98, the better for games.
Preference for games: Win98>xP>2000.
Win2008 Server is very good. I think.
:top:

@cDDDe: yep, Windows 98 is more compatible with older games, but sometimes crashes while playing, which is annoying.
But as a matter of fact, back when used my K6-2 I had more FPS in Win2000 than in W98

@Aurion: Indeed; but Win1.0's Reversi still works on XP after some hacking (don't know if it's OK to link to the site here but you can google "Misc. Windows Screen Shots") :shockkk!:

I'm not surprised, even my phone can win against me in reversi

@anon: LOL take a look at that binary game, heh !! what a dummy one back then

anon

I think it was the only game bundled with Win1.0 back then. But it's fun to play even now
Some other Windows 1.0 apps work in XP too:

damn, this is too Stoneage tools anon, hehe look @ the painter,so LAME  sure funny to use

anon
07.09.08, 18:32
Not really, because you can't use too many of its options

And it can only save images in the .msp format (yes, the same extension as Windows Installer Patches), so I have yet to find another program that'll open its documents...

Aurion
12.09.08, 05:03
that format was supported back then in Win 98 If im not mistaken, mybe a google search for one of the old tools might help

anon

Paint? Well, I think it's probably been bundled with every Windows edition out there.
But as far as I know, W98's can only open BMPs, and not MSPs.
XP's can also open and save .gif, .jpg and .png apart from bitmaps.
