View Full Version : Ares Galaxy

20.05.08, 22:22
Ares Galaxy is an open source P2P file sharing application that uses its own decentralized supernode/leaf network. It was spun-off from the Gnutella network in 2002, and is currently hosted on SourceForge.net. Ares Galaxy has a simple, quick access interface with a built in audio/video viewer. The latest versions also support the BitTorrent protocol and Shoutcast radio stations.

Hi anon

It works alright, but there's no ares in my Vista! It opens on startup and when I shut it down and try to open it again abracadabra there's no ares.

Any idea?

You could try search for Ares in Program Files and then make a shortcut for it on the desktop.

Check if ares.exe is still running after you close it... v2.0.9 has this kind of issues with Vista, you can use v1.9 instead.

i don't know , for me is ares to slow. it only connects with max 10 peers ..
is there a way to get more speed or peers ?

26.01.10, 20:52
The General -> Personal details -> Speed setting controls how many peers you can connect to. Choosing a faster connection type means more connections. I have set it to "DSL" and it downloads fast.

Also, make sure you limit your upload speed to 80% of the maximum, to avoid saturating it.

Thanks, I wonder why they never post the changelog.

09.02.10, 17:02
Beats me.I couldn't find any either.Maybe because they don't make so many changes??:confused2: But that would sound stupid.

09.02.10, 17:03
I'd release the changelog even if it's just a few lines regarding "bugfixes". But most of the changes are probably for the chat part of the program, which I don't use.

Is anyone here using Ares still? It was really massive years ago (and this thread, one of my first, stands as a monument to that), but then fake files and spam started taking over. If I were to judge by the amount of search results, I'd say two thirds of its old userbase have abandoned it. Nonetheless, I keep my install configured and working, and use it to find single songs sometimes (haven't found a good Groovedown replacement so far).

Note that versions after removed the bundled skins, ability to disconnect from the network and the "my PC is firewalled" checkbox, and have a few bugs on top of that (the media player buttons don't initially appear, "pause/unpause all" doesn't actually affect all downloads), so I can't recommend them.

i guess u're the only one using it

I miss limewire too.. No matter what u type. it always came up with a result . even if u type .." what.cd staff sucks dcik"
and most of the time u download a file it always turned out to be porn

Just dropping by to say Ares is effectively dead. Versions 2.3.1 and below can no longer connect to the original network (all supernodes seem to be nonfunctional), and newer ones are basically a YouTube ripper plus TPB unblocker.
