VLC - the cross-platform media player and streaming server
VLC media player is a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats (MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, mp3, ogg, ...) as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. I found I had better success using Media Player Classic for H264 files. Add an external filter such as CoreAVC and you're good to go.

In recent times, particularly with HD content, I find I get the best combination of performance and support from MPlayer.
