Massive Bittorrent tracker Demonoid decided this week to switch from it's .com address opting for a .me instead. The moves comes as US government agencies began seizing the domain names of websites alleged to be involved with copyright infringement. The number of domains seized in recent days now sits at over 90.
Bittorrent search engine Torrent-Finder.com was one of the domain taken over by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The site had appeared on a copyright infringement hitlist which is believed to be the reason the domain was seized. Demonoid.com also appeared on the hitlist as a "notorious market" for copyright infringing content. Wanting to be one step ahead of the US government and thus preventing an intteruption in service, Demonoid has decided to make the switch to a .ME domain. The .ME domain is operated and controlled by Montenegro. While Montenegro has similar copyright infringement laws as the US, it is believed they do not have the resources required to enforce them.
The switch means Demonoid will not face an interruption in service if the US government decide to seize their domain.
