Hi @all guys.
For you, what's the most popular p2p network (or protocol, but difference?), at the moment ? In past, eMule Rules, but now there is the torrents... so, at the moment, what's the p2p network wich most users ? eDonkey/KAD or Torrent ? Or maybe Gnutella ?

Maybe on google there is statistics about popularity of these kind of network...

If asking which protocal / network is most used for the purpose of research then searching at some researh or news sites is better because they would have actually looked into it.

If asking this to determine "which one should I use" then that wont get u far. If the thing u want is on irc and nowhere else would u use irc or "the most used"?

Concerning Networks, I could think it's Torrent, but for me Torrent is not a network, but a protocol... and I feel like Gnutella is more filled with lot of fakes than eMule (but it's maybe because I know better use eMule as Gnutella... ed2k links sites help, too...). So, I would say eMule...

Although peerates stats (http://edk.peerates.net/peers.php?lang=0) are showing a decline (and a sharp one, since eDonkey serv. no2 is down):

People gradually leave the P2P, and prefer DDL or streaming (the most geek people use usenet, too). But large scale usage of DDL it's regression, and even a strategical mistake imo, because of the recentralisation it induces.

also, even though bittorrent is a protocol, it is being used to create multiple networks, thus it can be said that a file-sharing network is based on the bittorrent protocol, which makes it a bittorrent network - the terminology may be somewhat inaccurate but not really incorrect either

i'd view it as an enrichment, the more sources available, the better - the most user friendly & useful of these will achieve the highest popularity, currently bittorrent occupies that position - regarding the contents, two elements stand out:
- new/current releases
- old releases (related: requests, collections)
that would also play an important role in defining user preferences towards the app/network/protocol/site of choice

streaming is troublesome for archiving purposes, availability, quality, reductionist nature (fi. single songs), bandwidth usage, playback and so on
also, i don't see usenet usage as a particularly geeky action, one needs only a suitable news-reading app and access to binaries to be able to download for example

i still feel that if you are in the right hubs, direct connect is better than torrents in terms of content

For me most download source will be http and ftp .
Bittorrent will be the most used for P2P.

i would say P2P wise, bittorrent, now. Before, it was kazaa and that sort of trash. Bittorrent is fairly good, the mechanic behind it and the philosophy is strong. Support BT!

What changed now, in this 2012, and what's coming for 2013 ??

eMule (ed2k/kad network) or uTorrent (torrent protocol, tracker & dht) ? :D
