Yes dude the recent builds of ACDSee totally sucks, it takes ages to load. What I have done is for .gif extensions I use ACDSee and for normal .Jpg,png etc I have lately being using Picasa it loads like in half a second and is much spontaneous and very good GUI.

I still use ACDSee Classic (2.43) on my Win7 Ultimate machine.
The only major disadvantage is I can't do image editing like I could with the more recent viewers.
But I want a blazingly-fast image viewer. So, I'm sticking with this Classic version. :)

Anyone tried that? I have my router as a firewall, but I'm considering adding an extra layer of protection. Being lightweight is a welcome attribute, as my netbook has limited resources.
I have it installed on one of my OS and I haven't any concerns at the moment. It is like most firewalls that you install as this one, like others, goes through a training period. It's a very simple and easy to navigate interface. If I were to compare firewalls like Privatefirewall with another one like Comodo firewall I'd say that Comodo has more to navigate through with a bunch of settings that you never even bother with (Disregarding for a moment that Comodo is a very good software in itself).
However, as per my experience with PrivateFirewall, in addition to it having a small footprint, an easy to navigate interface along with the usual and expected training that normally goes with firewall softwares this one I've always found easy to use. Definitely a hell of a lot better than ZoneAlarm which seemed to do nothing except crash my entire system which left me a real bad taste in my mouth for ZoneAlarm (at least per my own experiences). I checked around a number of different places around the internet and on average, Privatefirewall was either somewhere near the top, middle, or mid-top...depending on who did the review of course. Nevertheless with my system and Privatefirewall being in place, on average the memory it takes up is about 5600 K.
I've had Privatefirewall installed on one of my OS for about 6 months or so. The current version is 7.0.25.5
Don't let it's simplicity fool you into thinking that it's 2nd grade or something. Looks don't really matter all that much. It's functionality that counts the most. You can set custom and default settings for both Internet and Network security. It's got a process filter that, if you expand the window, will give you a set of rules that you have allowed for different programs. This along with logs and port tracking. It doesn't have much in the way of settings but when you think about it, how often do you actually tweek any of the settings with any kind of firewall-related software??
In my own case, I don't tweek any of the firewall settings that often b/c a firewall product creator is aware of some of the common tweeks that users have and may make the settings a default in his/her own product creation. I mean there are basic and advanced settings but the settings are not a mile long to go through. Maybe this is one of the ways that this firewall, which is free to use, isn't so heavily bogged down with useless settings and more so, size.
Overall, IMO, I'd set this one farther up the top then that sh**t ZoneAlarm that, like I said, crashed my system every time and wouldn't even let me log on. Like "what the hell!!" That thing was so bat-fu**k stupid, I can't speak enough of how bad that crap-ZoneAlarm was.
I have installed PF and just finished setting it up. It is, as you said, very easy to use. Right now I put it in training mode for the whole week, so that it learns the programs I run and doesn't bother me with tons of alerts. The process monitor is also cool. If anything suspicious tries to run, I can prevent it from doing so. And it has an IP blocker that actually works, unlike Windows' built-in nullrouting which I wasn't able to use despite disabling dead gateway detection and whatnot. Very useful to block certain harmful IPs. :yup:

There is a program that I have been using for the last number of years called Safarp. It's very fast, lightweight, and is a better replacement to the built-in Add/Remove programs feature inside Windows.

During our test, we were really surprised to see how easy and fast someone can install this application. Truth is, the installer doesn't look too professional though, although it's extremely efficient and takes only a few seconds after everything is dropped in the right place.
And it doesn't ask for a computer restart, something that was mandatory in the past and allowed viruses to spread and sometimes disable antivirus protection.
The interface seems a bit too crowded and clunky and we wouldn't really expect such a main screen from an antivirus that's supposed to be a leader in its segment. The settings menu comprises tons of options, but as always, you should pay extra attention when browsing through them.
There are four scanning modes, “Reputation Scan”, “Quick Scan”, “Full System Scan” and “Custom Scan”, each with its very own configuration settings. Of course, the third one takes a lot of time and uses a moderate amount of computer resources, but it checks every single file on your machine to make sure you're on the safe side.
Norton Antivirus comprises basically everything to stay away from malicious files and online attacks, including an antivirus, antispyware, intrusion prevention, email and browser protection, but also the so-called “Download Intelligence” to check your downloads on the go.
Another interesting feature is the so-called “Facebook Scan” that automatically scans your Facebook wall to verify the published links.
Another problem we experienced during our test is related to the update process which seems to take ages when running Norton Antivirus for the first time. It depends on the Internet connection indeed, but the first update needed a lot of time to download and unpack the files.

If you are looking for a quick tool to reset or either alter the creation, written or accessed fields of a file you might want to consider the metasploit anti-forensics timestomp.
This tool is purported to be the first ever tool that allows you to modify all four NTFS timestamp values: modified, accessed, created, and entry modified. Not only can this throw off a simple Administrators scan of a directory, it can also confuse a forensics investigator.

I always wanted to find a command line version of this type of program.
Suffice it to say forensic guys can learn everything. I read a guide somewhere about the hardware they use for gathering information. If something like that ever comes down to the avearge folk we're dead.
Even truecrypt, that avowed of all HDD encryption softwares is vulnerable to forensic de-encryption methods. I think it's just a matter whether one can stay ahead of the other in things like that. Other softwares like firewalls/anti-virus' that have built in encryptions and even perhaps some other stand alone programs are all, IMO, easily broken by strong forensic programs.

Ya, I user Palemoon too. What a great browser. I love how this browser can import your entire Firefox profile. Including its' extensions, themes, bookmarks, passwords, and everything in between. What's also good is what you also mentioned. The fact that it has a lower memory footprint. Much faster. And currently, it has the same v15 as Firefox. Probably just one of many or a few reasons why Firefox has stabilized itself over the last couple of years amongst other competitive browsers rather than taking off like a rocket with no stopping it at all. It has the same engine as Firefox but with fewer needless functions built in it.

anyfs-tools provides a unix-like toolset for recovering and converting filesystems. The following utils are included in the toolset:
nyfs-tools - toolset for recovering and converting filesystems and recovering data from a block device.
build_it uses LINUX OS filesystem drivers to recursively read directory entries in order to obtain information about all of the filesystem inodes. The information is then saved to an external inode table.
anysurrect searches block devices for specific file types, based on their file structure. Information about each found file type is also saved to an external inode table.
reblock changes the filesystem block size. reblock uses information from the filesystems inode table to change each files' fragments placing so that it will align with block boundaries but with a new block size.
build_e2fs proceeds from external inode table information for building ext2fs filesystems on device.
build_xfs proceeds from external inode table information for building xfs filesystems on device.

Not really a program but will help test anti-viral software;
n order to facilitate various scenarios, we provide 4 files for download. The first, eicar.com, contains the ASCII string as described above. The second file, eicar.com.txt, is a copy of this file with a different filename. Some readers reported problems when downloading the first file, which can be circumvented when using the second version. Just download and rename the file to "eicar.com". That will do the trick. The third version contains the test file inside a zip ARCHIVEe. A good anti-virus scanner will spot a 'virus' inside an ARCHIVEe. The last version is a zip ARCHIVEes containing the third file. This file can be used to see whether the virus scanner checks ARCHIVEes more than only one level deep.
Once downloaded run your AV scanner. It should detect at least the file "eicar.com". Good scanners will detect the 'virus' in the single zip ARCHIVEe and may be even in the double zip ARCHIVEe. Once detected the scanner might not allow you any access to the file(s) anymore. You might not even be allowed by the scanner to delete these files. This is caused by the scanner which puts the file into quarantaine. The test file will be treated just like any other real virus infected file. Read the user's manual of your AV scanner what to do or contact the vendor/manufacturer of your AV scanner.

Once the file indexing has occurred, you can locate files quickly by using the application's search form. It works like "updatedb" and "locate" commands in Unix. In other words, it uses databases to store information about directory structures and uses these databases in searches. The use of these databases provides very fast searching speed. The software includes a dialog-based application as well as console programs that can be used to update and access the databases. Locate32 is not primarily meant to find text or data within files, but it has a primitive feature to do this. Supported operating systems: Windows 98/ME/NT4/2000/XP/Vista/7.
Still in development, lightweight and portable and takes only 10 seconds to scan 200.000. Not much can beat that these days.
