Refer to the following Screenshot.

Screenshot 2. Add CoreAVC to external H264/AVC1 decoder

CoreAVC is not a free decoder and it must be properly installed in your system at first. And then, press the button "External Decoder Search" in the second screenshot below and "Add after Scan". CoreAVC will be appeared in the list if it is installed in your system.

After configuring, you can confirm the operation by Tab or Ctrl-Tab info box when playing H.264 videos.

Thanks for this, it'd be have been useful to know it when I installed the CoreAVC codec and wondered why it wasn't being used

In MPC-HC you have to go to View -> Options -> Internal Filters, and untick both H.264/AVC checkboxes under "Transform Filters".

Or you can add them under "External Filters" and set them to "Prefer".

Indeed. Using CoreAVC instead of ffdshow to decode H.264 video almost halved MPC-HC's CPU usage for me.

IIRC CoreAVC decoder doesn't have DXVA. For mpc-hc the internal DXVA enabled decoder uses very little CPU
