A study conducted by PRS, the British music royalty collection agency, looked into the downloading habits of the average user of file-sharing networks. They found that the most downloaded tracks mimic the music charts. That is, people tend to download music that's already popular.

that was to be expected, 'popular' music is mostly created with the goal to attract large groups of listeners and with a big marketing everyone knows about them - this is also the reason it uses 'known to work' formulas for setting trends and/or exploiting them

its called: curiosity, buzz, keeping up with/exploring the genre, increasing the ratio with new entries,...
as for scene 'pirates' - like someone said - they'll just 'pirate' anything you give them (with some exceptions ofc)
