It wasn't the first for me, but yes the oldest one I know. Wolf3D is like the grandfather of first person shooters

Yes, the grandpa of 'em all. I remember playing it on a 4Mb RAM pc, back then we had to use a trick in ms-dos boot so to make it consume less conventional memory (640k) and squeeze some juice from machine resource to get it played. I also remember the use of some alt. autoexec.bat to get some games played. LOL
PS. no music and sound effects :shockkk!: just the ol' pc-speaker. Some years later we could experience some nice sound on it with the good ol' creative multimedia kits. :klatsch_3:

Special bootdisks with custom CONFIG.SYS files to maximize the amount of memory available for games, right?

Special bootdisks with custom CONFIG.SYS files to maximize the amount of memory available for games, right?Yes, the very same!! I remember some games required the famous emm386.sys or something. Original DOS didn't come with these lines set, so we needed to input  There was also the technique to press F4 during boot time, lol... this method is the grandpa of F5 windows secure mode.

EMM386.EXE?

Some games and apps also needed to be run through LOADFIX or else you'd get the infamous 64K error, if I remember correctly. Those were the times :')
