Speedtest.net (http://www.speedtest.net/)
http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/9039/speedtest380309.png
You can choose from among many Internet servers distributed worldwide to run this download / upload speed test. The Speedtest.net service utilizes single large file transfers and is therefore good for measuring total network bandwidth but does not give as much information about network latency effects. It boasts a cool Flash interface for displaying results. Some other popular speed test services on the Internet - like Speakeasy - are based on the Speedtest.net technology.

Dslreports.com (http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest)
http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/1424/54919087.png
DSL Reports offers multiple speed test services. Their Flash-based application supports standard broadband speed testing while an alternative Java applet promises better accuracy on very high-speed connections. Other tests are designed for mobile phones.
These tests are among the few available that report on latency (in milliseconds) as well as upload / download bandwidth. However, the Flash test in particular may under-report the bandwidth score if your computer has a slow CPU. Be sure to compare these results to another service that does not use a Flash interface.

CNET Bandwidth Meter (http://reviews.cnet.com/internet-speed-test/)
http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/245/96361478.png
CNET Bandwidth Meter is one of the oldest download speed test services on the Internet. Based on the type of connection you specify, the test will download one image file of size between 50 KB and 1.5 MB to calculate download bandwidth. It uses a fixed server location in the U.S. Do not attempt to re-run the test using the browser's Back button as results will be unreliable.

Speakeasy Speed Test (http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/)
http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/3515/64727805.png
The Speakeasy connection speed test is one of the most popular on the Internet, often praised for its accuracy and its cool interface for displaying results.

AuditMyPC.com Internet Speed Test (http://www.auditmypc.com/internet-speed-test.asp)
http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/84/32084925.png
Another great Internet speed test site is this one hosted at AuditMyPC.com. While there are no multiple server locations to choose from, the results are very easy to read and have been fairly accurate based in my tests.
Like most other bandwidth speed test sites available, this site tests both download bandwidth and upload bandwidth.

InternetFrog (http://www.internetfrog.com/mypc/speedtest/)
http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/5455/79700202.png
A java based internet speed checker where download and upload speed is calculated. How fast or how slow the connection can be easily identified by a speed graphic ranging from 14.4 modem(14.4 kbps) to T4 lines (274 Mbps).

speed.io (http://www.speed.io/index_en.html)

Which one would you say gives the most lenient speeds?

For some reason SpeedTest.net never measures my connection fully; it always gives me half of what I'm supposed to get... (no I didn't leave uTorrent on), but Speed.io does so I guess it must be something to do with SpeedTest.net.
Anyways just to share:

A general tip would be to use the server that's closest to you.

If you mean most precise results i would say speedtest.net and choose closest server, also could be a site that is closest to where you live

Good tip, and I usually do that, but still usually half-speeds. Let's not forget that there are other factors: the server's load, as well as the country it is located in as some countries have better infrastructures than others.

speed.io is powered by speedmeter.de, so I guess I have to like them as well!

Testing your speed against a close server may often be misleading, especially for those who live in less Internet oriented countries - to get a realistic result, pick a server from the country who's websites you frequent.

I always felt that this was true too.

You phone your ISP b/c you're experiencing slow speeds on account of your grandma visiting and paying you a visit rather than staying in the retirement home where things are commonly slow. She must have some kind of 'aura' of 'slowness' about her person that affects, in some etheral-3rd-dimensional way, your internet connection.
So ya...you phone your ISP and do the usual thing that the internet is for: bitching about slow speeds and unable to share porn.

Where I come from, ISPs always "test" your speed by loading a page from their internal network or any local site, which of course transfer blazing fast. I thought that somewhat deceptive tactic was a standard.

On the other side, you have noobs who think that because they bought Cable Internet and it was ultra-fast for the tech guy, every site must load like that, even if it's hosted on China.
