The coder is an old friend of mine from another scene (it's a small world), he wouldn't put anything bad in it.

Also, I got this job offer, seems legit

Anyone has this "problem" with W7, when you copy big files (over 5GB) to you USB key, that window pops out and it says how much longer it'll take to finish, but when it comes to last 5s it takes forever? For me it's like 2 minutes!

This has always happened to me! No idea why, wish I knew though. It's like you said, usually with larger files, the progress bar sometimes goes fast and near the end it gets stuck for minutes.

Anon: the pxc-coding link you provided triggers a block in opendns saying "This domain is blocked due to a phishing threat."

Copying involves more operations than "create a new file and send data from A to B". New file records must be created in the file system, formerly free space must be marked as now occupied, transactions must be written to the log file (under NTFS), and disk caching settings can affect speed too. The Windows file copying dialog doesn't account for those factors, hence the big delay before finishing.

Copying lots of small files takes longer than a single one of the same size, because the above operations must be done for each one. Under Windows, copying one or more very big (>1 GB) files can also slow everything down by constantly exhausting the amount of memory available to the system cache - you have to use an unbuffered copying utility to avoid that. XCOPY /J is available after Windows 7, and Robocopy supports the same switch under 8 and above; for XP, there's UBCopy (requires the .NET Framework), Total Commander's big file copying more (shareware and may have problems with highly select disk controllers) and RichCopy (which I haven't tried, but Wikipedia says it can corrupt files).

    • slikrapid is busy compiling Plato's Unwritten Doctrines (tome I), breaking several 30000-character limits in the process.
    • hellman currently walks the Earth looking for a bank that will grant the loan he needs to start his all-natural whey factory.

None of those things are true, but you shouldn't let reality get in the way of a good story or something like that

There's a reason XP will run on computers from before the turn of the millennium And there's also a reason Microsoft as well as many third-party companies ended support for it.

With that said, XP will never die.

Some students at my school were moving a grinder today, when it tumbled, fell down, and smashed the foot of one of them

The worst part is, they shouldn't have been doing that at all - especially without protective gear. Their teacher and management may get into heavy duty trouble for this.
