IrfanView is a very fast, small, compact and innovative FREEWARE (for non-commercial use) graphic viewer for Windows 9x/ME/NT/2000/XP/2003/Vista.

It is trying to be simple for beginners and powerful for professionals.

IrfanView is trying to create new and/or interesting features in its own way, unlike some other graphic viewers, whose whole "creativity" is based on feature cloning, stealing of ideas and whole dialogs from ACDSee and/or IrfanView! (for example: XnView has been stealing/cloning features and whole dialogs from IrfanView, for 8+ years).

This is a very good general multimedia viewing program. It can open and save images in a bunch of different formats, some of which I had never heard about before.

Furthermore, its MP3 player plugin (I recommend you download the plugin pack to be able to open all supported formats) can open pretty much every .mp3 file out there as long as it's a valid one (other players like WMP often can't play tracks depending on the encoder), it has a smaller memory footprint than other viewers (used 220MB to load a 44.4MB 9372x9372 JPEG, whereas PhotoFiltre used 260MB, and MS Paint crashed because it attempted to go beyond 500MB. When in audio-player mode it usually won't allocate more than a megabyte or two), and its video player will still let you smoothly watch a movie other players have skipping/freezing problems with - I still prefer MPC, though. Also, it's really non-invasive; if you want to uninstall it it's just a matter of running the uninstaller and deleting the folder at "Program Files" in case it was left over. It won't touch anything in your registry, except of course the needed keys for file associations.

IrfanView is my allrounder image viewer/media player - I prefer PhotoFiltre for image edition, but I'll have to say IV compresses JPEG better than PF even with the same quality % and progressive mode enabled in both.

I use IrfanView to view images too, just because it supports a lot of formats and doesn't need a lot of ressources because of needless additions.

But for videos and music I prefer VLC and Winamp, and to edit pictures I go with Photoshop.

What version of Winamp do you use? I personally went for 2.95, because of its l33tness and low resource usage.

There's also a free Audio Enhancer plugin that's just 80KB and is probably better than DFX, which you have to pay for.

I once used 5.x too. It took a while to start up, and sometimes its UI lagged, but I always thought the problem resided in something else, as I had all special effects (alpha blending, etc.) disabled. v2.x proved me wrong

By the way, I have attached the Enhancer plugin. It works with v5, so I recommend you check it out if you weren't using something else to do the same, or simply like testing stuff... it really boosts sound when set-up correctly.

i like irfanview, but i currently use XnView because it has the features i use or i need the most.

what irfanview doesn't have, that xnview does,
-tabs (maybe it does. too many options to look through.)
-can't add extra buttons to toolbar.
-100 % zoom button on toolbar (hotkey = Ctrl+H)


what irfanview has that xnview doesn't,
-sort directory files (xnview doesn''t have this option on the 'view' window. must select this option in the 'browser' window.)


now, these are the only things i use. both are great apps, but i'm so used to xnview.

@A-Day: IV does have the Ctrl+H hotkey But otherwise I'll have to say, it seems that XnView did have some ideas of its own after all.

To find the settings that best suit the music you listen to, you can start with applying the "general improvements" preset, and then playing around with the bass, treble and dry signal sliders until you get a combination that sounds the best. Also, you can disable ambience (like in my screenshot) if you have good speakers/headphones, to prevent echoing.

It can take some time to find the perfect settings for you, so when you finish doing this, make sure you save them: Presets -> enter a name at the bottom, and click Save.

Yes, I would like to see a tab plugin for IrfanView.

So that everytime you open another picture a new tab will be created instead of opening another window.
