Handbrake is the only way I can watch HEVC video: by converting it to x264 in ultrafast mode first

If you got Intel you can do it in 9 min x265 10bit and is even smaller than x264
I do have an Intel processor, it's just not good enough to decode x265 in real time. Fortunately, content only available in that codec is rare.

I tried this, but encoding stalls after starting, then fails producing an empty file. I also tried the trick of connecting an external monitor and doing some BIOS tweaks, which are allegedly required under certain conditions, to no avail.
Celeron N2808. Intel's Ark says QSV is supportedWhat kind of cpu?

iGPU: 15.33.46.64.4885
Motherboard: this is a laptop, so I didn't exactly pick one.
BIOS: MPBYT10A.86A.0038.2015.1208.1744
All the latest and last ones (before this hardware was discontinued). The driver assistant didn't do much for me at the time. Also tried setting various values for the FeatureControl registry key, but only managed to break brightness control in the process.
My guess is that either there's some strange incompatibility with my specific setup or the processor doesn't actually support QSV. But I'll live

As far as the firmware is concerned, that would be a yes This a "template" model which any brand can sell as their own after customizing it (with a very small pool of components; mine had a DVB tuner which I removed) and sticking their logo on the screen. Used to be fairly frequent with low-price laptops in the past, don't know about now.
I'll let you know when I try those drivers.
