Sometimes it is still nessesary to use a public tracker.
May it be because you can't find something you are looking for on private trackers or you don't have a membership on a decent private tracker. Like me.
I was wondering if there is a way to become undetectable from these MPAA, RIAA goons and other IP-logging companies or at least minimize your risk of getting caught.
I have little information on how these companies operate so I would appriate if someone has some information.
This would be my approach.
- Route a torrent client through a proxy. For example TOR. I use it in connection with Privoxy.
- Minimize your download speed to avoid hurting the TOR network.
- Get well connected use PEX and DNT
- Copy the list of all seeding Peers.
- Open a second client which directly connects to the net.
- Use a mod that disables Upload. I use userenity with the NO Upload option activated.
- Add the torrent and delete all tracker information. Disable PEX and DNT.
- Add the copied peerlist and start the torrent.
This would protect you from appearing in the swarm, but if these companies happen to be in the list of active seeders then you are out of luck.
I don't know how these "anti- piracy" companies operate. Do they just verify the files, copy all IPs in the swarm or do they become seeders and log everybody that connects to them?
How does the situation differs in Germany? Are entrapment-like tactics legal there?
Is there a flaw in my reasoning?
What can be improved?
Another thing concerning German users of Demonoid. Like myself
Demonoid is not considered very private since it is very easy to get a membership and new torrents can be downloaded without being a member.
But it blocks German IPs so you have to use a proxy to get to the site.
This is a good thing.
Hence there must be very few German users at demonoid. So IP-logging companies from Germany wouldn't be interested. It's not lucrativ enough.
Another example of security through obscurity.
