In 1972 Ed Catmull (founder of Pixar) and his colleagues created the world's first 3D rendered movie, an animated version of Ed's left hand. This is the film that they produced. It includes some "making of" footage (around 1:30) and some other early experiments.
Just wondering how many Cray's they had to hook together to render that. Ed Catmull was hired by pixar and is not its founder. Pixar was a division of Lucasfilm at the time. It was the mighty Steve Jobs who bought it off of George Lucas that turned it into the success it is today. To think he sold it to Disney for $7.4 billion!!! It is also amazing to think that there is probably more processing power in the average smartphone then there was in a supercomputer from the early 70's.
