Thread: Things to leave your computer doing overnight?

  1. #16
I think the most useful thing would be to do some video editing as this may take several hours to complete. You can also do specific hardware tasks that take some time to complete, some examples: fill the hdd with zeros, defragment large drives (over 1TB), ram diagnostics, benchmarks etc.
I never let my computer run overnight, not even for basic seeding operations.

download - my main box is on 24/7 - never stops downloading and fxping :)

if ever the planets align and it's not doing either of the above, it'll either be defragmenting on doing a manual virus scan with a different av to the one i usually use as a realtime scanner...

Night time is for seeding. (proper no throttle).
Also maybe an encode of a movie for my ipod. That takes a lot of time.

Run an SSH, FTP and web server. You may want to install squid/nginx or some other proxy server to use. Oh and.... you could always port scan some ranges

Gapo: FTP I'm already running for personal use. I don't have any good reason to install the other two, considering the limited upload speed. Of course, that's my particular case - with a good pipe running a proxy or OpenVPN server becomes a nicer idea.

Have a macro spam Twitter with perverse thoughts until you get banned. Profit.

Edit: Possibly from multiple accounts to add to the enjoyment.
