Unhappy Facebook, MySpace caught releasing user data

Facebook, MySpace caught releasing user data

In a seemingly never-ending string of damaging disclosures about its users' privacy concerns, Facebook has reportedly been releasing user data to ad companies that hadn't even asked for the info.

Facebook isn't alone this time: rival social-media site MySpace has also been called out in Friday's Wall Street Journal report by Emily Steel and Jessica E. Vascellaro — together with the content-sharing sites Livejournal and Digg.

The report says that the companies have delivered user data to major online advertising companies such as Google's DoubleClick and Yahoo!'s Right Media, despite explicit pledges to protect such information. The released material includes user names and ID numbers, together with data that could be used to accumulate a host of additional information on individual users, such as where they live, their names, occupations, incomes and places of employment.

Things like this are the reason I have a general dislike of social networks. Regardless of the excuses they give, privacy is pretty much non-existent on those. Of course, people also do their part by posting personal information, events, photos and videos like there's no tomorrow. (As I recall reading somewhere, Facebook is a "Big Brother" users are all helping to assemble click by click.)

Well, we all have to learn at once that Privacy depends on your actions, either in your real or online life, we all know that companies are made to EARN MONEY and not help anyone, you may call that Capitalism or whatever you want to call it.
I have a Facebook Account, with a fake name, an email with a nonsense username, just a photo of me and some I took depicting landscapes and I do know this helps Facebook grow somehow (through usage statistics, "Like" tracking etc) but I am given something in exchange: the chance to contact people I can not normally reach, to read news, play games etc.
So, you all know how that works, YOU got the CHOICE to trade in
