    uTorrent phones home

    Today I noticed lot of messages in my uTorrent logs that looked like this:

    [2010-05-06 xx:yy:zz] Reporting hang diagnostic information.
    [2010-05-06 xx:yy:zz] http://www.utorrent.com/report_probl...hblah.somedata
    [2010-05-06 xx:yy:zz] Hang reported successfully:

    For me that is unacceptable. I don't like anything from my computer connecting to outside world without me knowing it, least of all my never-trusted-closed-source pirating application calling back Bittorent Inc the bloody RIAA penpals

    Luckily, seems people caught it pretty soon (version or 2 ago?) and after few pathetic excuses about messing up, forgetting and whatnot devs were forced to put the option to disable it in UI.

    So for all those half as paranoid as I am, here it is:
    Options -> Preferences -> Advanced -> gui.report_problems -> false

    <personal opinion>
    I'll never forgive what.cd for starting global anti-vuze campaign forcing me to use this semi-functional piece of spyware crap
    <\personal opinion>

    Thanks for the info, I didn't know about that parameter. The backlink is removed in my mods, however

    I would think the only way to truely know what ut is sending is to analyse its packets with a sniffer. I company buys private, albeit excellent product you would expect them to somehow, openly or nefariously try to get something back on its investment

    Here's an analysis of what's sent to the "update" server, I've already posted this link before:

    I remember your link. Very interesting read

    Another way to know if ut calls home is by loading torrent and restricting somehow to only allow up/dl to another local client, this will narrow down the IPs uT calls.

    This will lighten the workload when using ur packet sniffer
