@Ive got three machines 1 XP and 2 W7
I havent needed to reinstall any of my OSs. My XP has been running for about a week and installed about 3 years ago.
I guess it depends on how you maintain your machine

Thats right you will need to make sure there is upgraded drivers for your really old hardware. there are also sites on the web that specialise in supporting old hardware for the x64 system.

you can try linux in virtual machines,
best is VirtualBox (way better than VMware)

yeah of course dude I think every one takes that into consideration
and yes I play multiple games and have other stuff on each of them and some mutiple copies on each. Especially games mmo lol.
I must admit from what I read about Linux the registry equivalent is like te FF profile in a single dir del that profile and the installation dir and it all gone. But in Windows its all in one massive file so harder to maintain. But you just need to know how and ive been doing it like this for yrs and its more of a bother to tell u the turth but the upside and thats why I choose this OS is because of the games andvaried appz I use.
I wish that there was a Linux equivalent of MS and excellent emu for Windows, Im stll looking and when I do humhahaha I dual boot one of my machines at start then maybe....

so ur saying an installed folder has one root (not admn root) and if that program for example is installed in
c:\programs\[video editing software]
(I know it may not be the default for appz)
and if [video editing software] were to be deleted all traces of [video editing software] would be gone?

"installed folder"? what's that supposed to mean?
ah, i think i know what you mean.has one root (not admn root) and if that program for example is installed in
c:\programs\[video editing software]
(I know it may not be the default for appz)
and if [video editing software] were to be deleted all traces of [video editing software] would be gone?
first of all there're no drive letters on unix. but yes, depending on what the developers are doing everything could be in one dir.
server apps are a good example. normally they don't need kinda 'profile' dir for every user so depending how they were compiled all would be able to sit in one dir.
let's take the apache webserver e.g. depending on the compilation options you can have it all in one dir. and if you wanna get rid of it just delete that dir.
so yes, that's possible.

What ur saying is for specific circumstances. Im referring to whats in general. We can find numerus progs for Windows that just uses one dir in fact we dont have to go far as some of the mods here uses only one dir in their installation.
emule can also use two dirs in its intallation or just one thats program specific as in ur example.
Im saying in general is there a config dir like windows's %appdata% for Linux where appz can store their data whilst still being installed in their own dir?

If what you say is true, meaning every application is "only" installed in one dir and or its sub dirs and if wanting to completley delete any application one would only need to del the dir and sub dir where the app is stored because the app's data is only stored in one dir (or its sub dirs) then I must say that Linux in this respect is much much easier to maintain.

and even if the files are cluttered it's still way more easy cause every config file is just text and unlike windows if you're doing something via terminal it's exactly done as you wrote it in there. no file locks, countless confirmations etc.
that's called 'user friendly'
