    Linux vs Windows 7

    Windows 7

    * Better at synthetic benchmarks.
    * Faster transfer of large files.
    * Final version likely to improve.
    * Suspend/resume works!
    * Desktop search is well implemented and can go online.
    * Media libraries can be pinned to the start menu and task bar.
    * Jump lists can genuinely help improve efficiency.
    * Starter: No Aero and no 64-bit.
    * Home Basic: Developed for emerging markets.
    * Home Premium: Standard edition including Aero and touch.
    * Professional: Adds remote desktop and encrypted filesystem.
    * Enterprise: Unix application support and volume licensing.
    * Ultimate: As with enterprise, but for individual users.

    Linux

    * Faster booting.
    * Less memory usage.
    * Smaller install size.
    * Broader hardware compatibility.
    * Nepomuk blurs the border between local and online.
    * Gnome Do replaces the task bar entirely.
    * Google's Desktop widgets now on Gnome and KDE.
    * Starter: No Linux is this restrictive.
    * Home Basic: Crunchbang or Ubuntu.
    * Home Premium: For eye candy, try Mint or Kubuntu.
    * Professional: Fedora offers encryption as an installation option.
    * Enterprise: OpenSUSE should work well with Windows.
    * Ultimate: No matter which Linux you choose, there's no restrictions.

    Well Windows vs Linux it is hard to compare.

    Windows has Security through obscurity, which is controversial principle.
    Linux security through minority, but linux is generally security oriented and what is most important people using it mostly know a lot about networking/it security. Open saurce makes possible making e hotfixes and sharing them fast..

    Do not underestimate Ubuntu (Debian based distros). Ubuntu will grow strong due to it's raising popularity.

    Long time ago on backtrack irc channel there was topic about security: Ubuntu>Vista>OS X, saying that now it is Ubuntu>Seven>OS X might also be accurate.

    For the entertainment average people will likely choose Windows 7/OS X.

    There is no such thing as home basic,home premium shit when it comes to linux.Every user has everything he wants on every distribution.Alot of companies are using ubuntu rather than OpenSuSE.

    It depends on the purpose of using computer. Windows 7 is better for gaming, watching movies, etc. For everything else linux is better. Wiindows 7 is also the best choice for beginner users because of its intuitive interface.

    did you use a current linux lately?
    i can't see how windows or linux would be more resp. less intuitive. a few years ago you'd have been right but today you don't have to be a terminal-god anymore to get along with linux.

    hehe, well, it's trü.

    let's say i'm a web designer and i need certain apps to remain compatible to my clients then i'm forced to winblows (or mac maybe) no matter what's actualy the 'better' os.
    but when i'm a web developer and don't need much more than a good editor anyway? then linux it is.

    on the other hand let's say i'm looking for a server. well, then linux is the way to go. or one of the bsds e.g.
    but my server should support wintendo exclusive services? bummer, windoze again.
    and so on.

    in the end technically unix is the 'best' but it dösn't matter much when the requirements dictate ...

    A lot of ordinary consumers buy PCs for general work and may add in that little extra for gaming. If developers of games were to support Linux in a big way then consumers will follow. But the thing is its usually the other way around, devs following consumers.

    So if hardcore Linux people wanted more people to get into Linux as their main os then one of the ways to do it would be to make lots of high qual games for free (initally) for Linux.

    Anyone who misses Windows can always install emulators and the like such as Wine to run their windows appz on Linux.

    For the mean time Windows lovers have no great need for Linux because there is just not a big pull the other way.

    There are already lots of free and awesome games for linux.It's just that they're not advertised enough.
    Here are some examples:
    Battle for Wesnoth
    Heroes of Newerth
    A Fast Paced First Person Shooter Game–Warsow
    Nexuiz - Home - A free open-source fast paced first person shooter (FPS) for Windows, Linux and OSX
    The Mana World
    http://assault.cubers.net/ and all other games made on cube engine.

    and there was also a nice mmorpg made by the heroes of newerth team but I can't remember it's name.

    Well I tried linux and all windows 98, xp, vista & 7. Till windows xp only was out, I had dual boot computer with linux, but after win 7, i just got rid of it. Tired of working on everything to make it work from codecs to play videos, better graphics, working on pdf, documents....list goes on....If you need lot of options fast and easy, then win 7 is answer.
