TorrentBytes Offline - Again
July 21, 2007

TorrentBytes is a private BitTorrent tracker who rose to stardom in the latter part of 2004 and early 2005. Since that time, it has established itself as one one of the premier private BitTorrent trackers, and with that establishment has come the inevitable complexities of running such a popular website. One of those inevitabilities is the susceptibility to attack, which TorrentBytes fell victim to last month.
Earlier in June, TorrentBytes published several updates regarding a vicious series of DoS (Denial of Service) attacks, which crippled the site for nearly two weeks. The site returned toward the end of June, and all seemed well at the TorrentBytes camp.
However the longevity of that recovery is now under siege. It appears, whether intentional or not, TorrentBytes has been taken offline.
"WE have to take the site down for a bit to figure out what is going on:)"
Unlike the June attack, this current downtime is not explained. However the TorrentBytes IRC (Internet Relay Chat) support channel paints a more ominous picture.
"We will be reverting back to our old code and database, once the site goes live all members will be required to use
http://www.torrentbytes.net/recover.php to recover their passwords before logging in."
Whatever code and database TorrentBytes was using is now either gone or unusable. Whether this is intentional or the result of another attack in unknown, as Slyck awaits comment from the administrator of TorrentBytes.
