The Pirate Bay Will Close Its Tracker and Remove Torrents (Updated)

Alongside the news that The Pirate Bay will sell shares on the Swedish stock market come some other significant changes. The site itself will decentralize and stop hosting and tracking torrents. Instead, The Pirate Bay will use a third party tracker and torrent hosting service to serve its users.

No way this can be happening after everything they have endured....

    Thumbs down

this means that because of all the media coverage and 'controversy' , TPB has become a brand name and therefore has value - ie. it can be profitable

looks like the napster scenario - a probable out-of-court settlement with the anti-p2p's, tracking only legal torrents (which satisfies the anti-p2p's and TPB founders are not sued anymore)

3rd party tracker/hosting will surely have better mechanisms for filtering unwanted contents and better legal ground for lawsuits against uploaders

So, Pirate Bay users can not only share files but they can buy a share of the site as well.
this way their private data are known and in case of a copyright violation they are sitting ducks for lawsuits

In the end The Pirate Bay is making these changes to ensure that the BitTorrent ecosystem stays intact no matter what happens, Peter Sunde told TorrentFreak.
this statement is a joke, the TPB owners decided to sell out while they can, washing their hands and earning a nice amount of money with the TPB sale

in the end looks like someone else will have to take the filesharing flag into further battles with the anti-p2p's

we may have had too high hopes for the TPB to fight for the freedom of filesharing

I don't understand your reasoning: Buying shares on the stock market don't implies that the buyer infringes some copyright's law.

This is at least partially inexact. TPB team and not TPB site is involved in the trial. Selling TPB 'site will have no influence on the legal charges concerning TPB's team.

you're right, but it does mean that the user (now shareholder) gives up his anonymity and if he makes a wrong move here comes the lawsuit (no need to find his IP or bother to call his ISP for user data)

i wouldn't be so sure about that - if the anti-p2p's get what they want in cooperation with tpb owners, they may drop the charges - imo this is a more powerful statement for other tracker owners as it gives them a free pass option if they shut down their trackers or make them copyright compliant
