Meteorite bombardment may have made Earth more habitable, said study - TelegraphResearchers say that the pieces of rock during the Late Heavy Bombardment (LHB) four billion years ago could have brought water and carbon dioxide with them which are the building blocks of life.
They believe that the extreme temperatures caused when the boulders entering the atmosphere would have vaporised the outer crust releasing the two compounds before impact.
Researchers suggest the delivery of this water could have made Earth's atmosphere wetter and the release of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide could have trapped more energy from sunlight warm enough to sustain liquid oceans.
