What's with all these Chinese trackers disabling their login pages? They just tell you to back up cookies and never log out? What gives?

It's a token measure against domestic law enforcement (a.k.a. lockdown mode).

I think China is strict on torrenting like US.

Russia has an "Internet kill switch" system designed to stop all international traffic. If it were activated, tracker staff within the country would effectively be locked away from their sites and unable to do any moderation or maintenance work (as it happened in Egypt during the 2011 protests).

In all likelihood they already have a backup plan, and I believe this is unlikely to occur in the first place, but the possibility exists.

Some have asked me about this, so I'd like to point out there's no top secret magic trick exclusive to trackers and you can use any cookie manager addon for this task (but the specific method I shared doesn't require any).

Windows users of Chrome and Firefox may be able to undelete lost cookies using the Previous Versions feature, as long as they were actually written to disk (i.e. an expiration date was set and private mode was not used) and a restore point made within the right time period exists.
