Session: end-to-end encrypted private messenging app with few metadata leakage

Session is an open source fork of Signal. It works on Android, Iphone, and Desktops (Windows/Mac/Linux). No email or phone number requirement. Traffic is onion-routed trough Loki network, a fork of ZeroNet.

The biggest issues I see with Signal are...
    • Mandatory use of phone numbers; no ability to use e-mail or nicknames for authentication
    • Centralization; while they tried to minimize the server's role by design, it's still required
    • (On Android) Reliance on Google Play Services; only solved relatively recently with a WebSocket

This one would tackle the first two and has a workaround for the third. However, it's still a newcomer. One of the most important features (onion routing) isn't even implemented yet, and an independent audit is just a plan at this point. Even the official FAQ acknowledges as much. Very much worth testing and keeping an eye on, but that's it for now.
