I'd say it's half horror, half mindfuck. See that you get the US version (144 minutes) if you want to give it a whirl.

I watched the original The Shinning for the first time a few years ago and I felt like I was watching it at a wrong time, I mean, I don't know how to explain this but it feels like it didn't age well, it's strange to watch it nowadays, I wish I had watched it a long time ago for some reason. I felt the same way about watching Blade Runner for the first a few years ago too.

during the years that have passed between those two viewings, you have changed as a person, your worldview has changed as a result of your experiences in life, therefore you cannot look at it 'with the same eyes' as before

even watching the same movie twice in a row would yield somewhat different reactions to it

Funny you should mention Blade Runner, certain editions of it feature an ending with an aerial view of the hillside, which comes from... unused footage of the very same scene at the beginning of The Shining

Anyway, slikrapid is right (this happens with music as well) and perhaps it's time to rewatch it myself, my last viewing was around seven years ago as I recall. Kubrick movies in general probably need to be seen at least twice to be understood and even that may not be enough, 2001's ending is a particularly serious offender...
