Movies from 2018 worth watching - A retrospective

an overview (incl. short comments) of movies from 2018 imo worth watching (may include earlier movies, whose scene bdrips/dvdrips/blurays got released in 2018) - afaik this is 'as good as it gets' this year

    action:

Den of Thieves (2018) 'heat meets the usual suspects' wannabe, decent action

    adventure:
    -

    animated:

Coco (2017) watch it for the top-notch animation, not the weak story
The Breadwinner (2017) decent middle-eastern themed story combining the current and the mythical in 2D animation

    comedy:
    -

    drama:

Only the Brave (2017) above average firefighter team adventures with a dash of the horse whisperess and flaming bears
Wonder (2017) somewhat stretched but watchable drama about a boy with facial deformities, or in pc parlance: 'differences'

    fantasy:

Avengers: Infinity War (2018) watch it for the effects, not the poor storytelling
Thor: Ragnarok (2017) watchable/enjoyable, but missed the genre with too many bad jokes and trashy side-plots

    fighting:
    -

    horror:

Ghostland aka Incident in a Ghostland (2018) nasty psychologically taxing horror

    other: (documentaries)
    -

    romance:
    -

    SF:
    -

    thriller:
    -

    western:
    -

    retro/remastered/extended releases:

2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) a classic, retro remastered BluRay release
Apache (1954) solid western, retro BluRay release
Buck Rogers in the 25th Century (1979) cheesy 'so bad its good' SF movie, retro BluRay release
Candyman (1992) old school horror, retro remastered BluRay release
Cliffhanger (1993) another classic, retro remastered BluRay release
Donnie Brasco (1997) well acted crime drama, retro remastered BluRay release
Farewell, My Lovely (1975) old school noir, good dialogue/monologue, retro BluRay release
Formula 51 (2001) aka The 51st State (2001) fun indie ride, retro BluRay release
Freaky Friday (2003) family-friendly teen-oriented movie, retro BluRay release
Halloween (1978) classic horor, 35th Anniversary Edition, retro remastered BluRay release
Helen of Troy (2003) good medium budget TV mini-series, retro BluRay release
Iron Monkey (1993) classic kung-fu movie, retro remastered BluRay release
Platoon (1986) classic war movie, retro remastered BluRay release
Rambo First Blood (1982) needs no introduction, retro remastered BluRay release
Rambo First Blood Part II (1985) needs no introduction, retro remastered BluRay release
Rambo III (1988) needs no introduction, retro remastered BluRay release
Superman (1978) a classic, extended retro BluRay release
The Age of Innocence (1993) well-done period drama, retro remastered BluRay release
The Big Country (1958) solid western, retro remastered BluRay release
The Hanging Tree (1959) solid western, retro BluRay release
The Man In The Iron Mask (1998) old school adventure, retro remastered BluRay release
The Matrix (1999) needs no introduction, retro remastered BluRay release
The Matrix Reloaded (2003) needs no introduction, retro remastered BluRay release
The Matrix Revolutions (2003) needs no introduction, retro remastered BluRay release
The Silence of the Lambs (1991) classic 'hannibal the cannibal' movie, retro remastered BluRay release

This list gets thinner every year

I didn't know a Blu-Ray of 2001 was out. I've been meaning to rewatch it for years now, so this is a good opportunity.

i don't think there were any BluRays back in 2001. I suppose these are HD transfers from original master tapes/ reels of 2001. Same ones they use for 4K restoration.

I meant 2001 the movie (A Space Odyssey), not the year 2001

As far as I know, if a movie was filmed in 35mm film and the source material is well-preserved, then it is more than good enough to make Blu-Rays, 4K and whatever comes next without upscaling.

I liked Creed 2, Searching, Venom, A Quiet Place, Sicario: Day of the Soldado, A Star Is Born, Black Panther, Summer of 84, The Clovehitch Killer. But tv shows are so much better than movies nowdays :)
