Thread: Wireless hotspot from Windows

    Wireless hotspot from Windows

I'm looking to configure a wireless hotspot derived from my ethernet connection.

I have tried the following commands on windows 8.1 in order to create the virtual adapter
    Code:
    netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=TEST key=123456
    netsh wlan start hostednetwork
The interface gets created but it does not receve any IP or related settings (gateway, DNS).
I have already shared the ethernet connection with the newly created virtual adapter but it still does not receive any settings from DHCP.

I'm mostly looking to build a wireles network from my ethernet connection.
If you know of a better way, please share it with me. I searched google for software, but some of them are really old, and the others cannot be found on trackers.

    Thank you

Back when I knew nothing about wireless networks, I created an ad-hoc hotspot and bridged it to my Ethernet adapter. It worked

ICS should work if it's enabled for the virtual Wi-Fi adapter, as this is what it's meant for, it does NAT and supports port forwarding. Unfortunately, I have never used it so I can't help much, but the following article may provide some pointers.

Using Wireless Hosted Network and Internet Connection Sharing

Remember that it also relies on several services (Internet Connection Sharing, Routing and Remote Services, Windows Firewall and all their respective dependencies), all of which must be running.

Lucius, I'll take a look at the software tomorow. Thanks.

anon, I've followed this guide to configure the interface:

I use OSToto Hotspot. Make sure you have a wireless adapter and card.

I have used this feature 1 time(s) since this thread was created, which obviously makes me an expert Here are some tips.
    • Windows 7 users must use Windows 7 drivers, as this features relies on the "Virtual Wi-Fi" capability XP and Vista don't have. On Windows 8 and above this is a non-concern, as there is no backwards compatibility for the NDIS versions used by old drivers: if your wireless adapter works, so will the virtual hotspot.
    • You can only change the network's name and password. Security is forced to WPA2-AES (so the password must be 8-63 characters long). There is a cap of 100 connected clients. I was not able to make it broadcast on 5 GHz band using a Broadcom adapter.
    • After you set the hosted network mode to "allow" and start it, you'll see a virtual wireless adapter up and running, but you're not done yet. You must open the properties of the connection you want to share -> Sharing tab -> tick "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection", select the virtual adapter on the drop-down box and click OK. Now you're done. There won't be a default gateway or DNS server configured in the virtual interface, but ICS will do NAT and UPnP transparently.

While extremely simplistic, this works if you can't or don't want to buy a router or USB adapter. That's the idea.

Android 6.x have these too, but the windows 10 one indeed is very neat and good for its purpose.
