Hollywood rules for alien invasions:

They only happen in the United States, which is also the only country whose armed forces are impossible to beat, even for a civilization capable of traveling light years through the galaxy.

Landmarks and important buildings must be destroyed at some point, to show they mean business. Double chance for the Statue of Liberty.

they symbolize humans in general, earth can be viewed as uniting many states, many stars

the only country whose armed forces are impossible to beat

not because they're especially powerful, but because they have a righteous cause (and a little help on the side, in which they trust, hehe)

even for a civilization capable of traveling light years through the galaxy.

our civilization may be labeled as 'capable of many things' but no one can tell how exactly they got there, their thoughts and solutions to problems simply appeared seemingly from out of nowhere, as symbolized by newton's apple (unexpected event or success) - any alien civilization would not be immune to that, nor to the era in which they find themselves existing/living

to show they mean business

a similar logic may explain why it was decided to stage an event as large as 9/11
