Thread: Google search engine alternative?

    Google search engine alternative?

What would be a good alternative to google search? Something that has similar results but does not track you.
    Thanks

DuckDuckGo - doesn't track you and doesn't record IP addresses. Results are good, you can search for text, images and videos, and the interface is highly customizable. The one I currently use and recommend.
ixquick/Startpage - same, except ixquick searches several of the biggest search engines at the same time.
Qrobe.it - doesn't track you, but does keep IP logs. It also displays results via AJAX, giving up quickly if your connection doesn't have low latency and high speed, and sometimes broke and returned Google redirect URLs for all results. So I stopped using it.

That's what they claim, but in reality, their result lists tend to be much shorter than Google's for the same queries. None of the "alternative" search engines can beat it in this regard, but they're good enough for 99% of searches.

I'm using it at the moment, made the switch yesterday.

    Thanks guys.

It was awesome (even providing SSL when Google didn't yet have it) and my main search engine for a long time, but they had several outages, and early 2012 would be the final one.

If somebody likes to support the planet, nature and the rain forest you should go with ecosia.
They are using the ad revenue from the searches to plant trees where they are most needed.

I'm using DuckDuckGo to this day, but since its servers are hosted on the US, I'm open to similarly reliable alternatives.

They claim to be an anonymous search engine, but they use Google CSE and set tracking cookies, there's nothing anonymous about that.

Patriot Search is obviously the best

Well, some time ago, the computer supplement of a local newspaper ran an article about a US-based intelligence program that could capture, store and filter communications all across the globe...

    Spoiler :
The article was published on 2000, the program was called ECHELON. Snowden is a hero, but most of us already knew the Internet had been tapped for a long time, he "merely" gave us the gory details.

Anyway, as a non-United States person, any traffic between me and that country is subject to data collection by the NSA and other intelligence agencies. So all else being equal, a search engine that is not hosted in (or routed through) the United States would be more private.

StartPage has servers in America and Europe and lets you prefer or force the usage of one region over the other.
