    i have a different answer: don't go to bed with worries on your mind and don't think about the next day (or future activities)

    Well, it's the same. I get up at 6:40, and go to bed at about 01:00 (+/- 15 minutes).

    I have a different question to your answer; How does one do that? I am very unable to shut off my brain in such a way. So far, only alcohol has helped.

    @Sazzy:

    well, a religious/spiritual solution would be to do a few prayers or mantras before going to sleep, in order to shift one's attention away from the daily (mundane, materialistic) towards the divine, bringing a sense of peace and safety
    in addition to that, it is a matter of practicing a certain kind of attitude in one's life called non-attachment (detachment):

    Attachment, that is the inability to practice or embrace detachment, is viewed as the main obstacle towards a serene and fulfilled life. Many other spiritual traditions identify the lack of detachment with the continuous worries and restlessness produced by desire and personal ambitions.
    In other words, while one is responsible and active, one does not worry about the past or future. The detachment is towards the result of one's actions rather than towards everything in life.

    My sleep cycle got really fuckered since I began living on my own. Yesterday (technically today) I went to bed around 2 AM and woke up at 10, but I've been known to start at any time during the afternoon, and/or wake up around or past midnight... well, I guess it's okay as long as I get those eight hours.

    And nighttime has fewer neighbors talking loudly, banging their doors shut or putting their TV on at volumes comparable to a space shuttle launch.

    generally, daytime is meant to be the part of the day to be awake and nighttime is for sleep - any significant or prolonged deviation will eventually manifest itself as some kind of a physical or psychological disorder

    even though the commonly cited figure is 8 hours, the spiritually based recommendation is to reduce one's sleep to be 'as little as possible', as long as it does not affect your health or the ability to function properly - naturally, this also means avoiding any other unhealthy habits (including unnecessary worries, stress, materialistic attachments, junk food/drinks/medicine and such), which contribute to having irregular sleeping patterns or occasional lengthy recovery sleep events - for example, top level spiritual teachers can manage to sleep only 2-3 hours and still function properly, but it is not recommended for the ordinary person to imitate such behavior

    personally, i sleep a little less than 6 hours, while during weekends this may rise to 8 or rarely 9 hours

    Well, it wasn't a conscious decision, but it's hard to argue with that otherwise. I guess things went downhill pretty quickly with no one to keep tabs on me anymore. At least I still make my bed and don't leave clothes lying around

    And, occasionally things will "reset" and I'll start doing a more normal schedule for a while.

    I'm glad you pointed that out. A lot of people see sleep as wasted time, but it isn't. Some require less sleep than others, but that's not a pattern you should actively attempt to replicate if it doesn't come naturally for you.

    I wake up as zombie, have no ideea where I am, where I'm going... Often feel fait and need to sleep all the way to work, subway, public transportation. By the time I get to the office I'm awake about 70%.
    However, I tried going to sleep at 11pm but I feel the same. So, why bother?
    I remember this time in my life. The decision to do so was not mine per-say, and I was forced into it. It all went downhill from here.
    Still.. from this timeline I miss the job and the people which are now out of my life, permanently.
