    Linux Mint 17 RC

    News came out yesterday.

Clement Lefebvre has announced the availability of the release candidate for Mint 17: "The team is proud to announce the release of Linux Mint 17 'Qiana' RC. Linux Mint 17 is a long-term support release which will be supported until 2019. It comes with updated software and it brings refinements and many new features to make your desktop even more comfortable to use. Update Manager was hugely improved. It shows more information, it looks better, it feels faster, and it gets less in your way. It no longer needs to reload itself in root mode when you click on it. It no longer checks for an Internet connection or waits for the network manager and it no longer locks the APT cache at session startup

Some of other newer features can be found at other link below:

    New features at a glance:

    Update Manager
    Drivers Manager
    Login Screen
    Language Settings
    Software Sources
    Welcome Screen
    MATE 1.8
    System Improvements
    Artwork Improvements
    Main Components
    LTS Strategy
Other new features are also here:

But also take care to review this important information here as it brings up known issues.

Login screen freezes for German speaking users

If you install Linux Mint in German, you won't be able to log in post-install.

    Workaround:

Press "CTRL+ALT+F1" to switch to console
    Login in text mode
    Type "mdm-recovery"

Solution (once you managed to login):

    Launch the Update Manager
Upgrade MDM (this bug is fixed in version 1.6.5)

So you should definitely review some of these known issues if your antsy to install the newest Mint.

Today I've decided to give Linux mint a try and till now, it's fast and very easy to use.
I have tried ubuntu but i went back to XP because of the resource-hog unity, now I use Linux mint 17 rebecca with xfce DE and it's better than XP.

Do you use Compiz, Seal? What are your thoughts on it?
It certainly has that wow factor, but when I first tried it a few years back, I was certainly impressed but didn't find it to be very user friendly. I ended up turning it off again.

    Hi.
The only thing I don't like about compiz is the amount of options. Speaking for myself only, it's just a tad too much. I think what's not so user-friendly is the amount of hot-keys utilized. This is a result of too many options available. I guess it's Linux's way of 'wowing' the crowd. But it is cool, though when worked with the Mate DE. I know, can be used with Gnome as well.

my main issue is that the wow-factor makes it slower. It takes a while for the animation to finish while all I wanted to do was swap to the other window as quickly as possible the default swap is blazing fast.
That being said, it is cool
