Or certain people could be considerate and respectful of others' wishes and use the spoiler tag

Well, alpacino's reaction is fairly hard to forget As for koel, he vanished after fulfilling his lifelong dream of getting the member title and noticing it didn't allow him to fly or shoot laser beams through his eyes. He is sorely missed, the entertainment value he provided was unparalleled.

its better that all of the participants gain an opportunity to learn some lessons from this event as opposed to just having things their way and getting spoiled (!) in the process

I thought it was a well known fact that the ending deviated from the manga and wasnt all that good?

    Spoiler Comparison:
For example, when L loses his life in the Anime, he doesn't say anything. But in the Manga he says something like "I knew I was right".

In the Anime, Yagami Light, Near, Matsuda and all the squad are in a sort of warehouse. When Light tries to get the piece of paper of his Death Note from the watch, he gets shot by Matsuda in non-fatal points, both times. While the other guy kills himself, Light runs away, and ends up in another building of what looks like an industrial area. Ryuk is on top of a chimney and speaking to himself, he "reminds" Light about his first promise, i.e. that he would be the one to write Light's name on the Death Note. And that's what he does.

In the Manga, Light is still in the warehouse and he sees Ryuk (Near sees him too since he has the Note as well) and he begs the Shinigami to write their names. Ryuk says "Ok Light, I'll write..." and while everybody tries to shoot him, he adds "...your name, Light." Light doens't want to believe it but when Ryuk shows the Note, his name is written there. Light sees his entire life and remembers the same sentence Ryuk told him when they met (i.e. that he would be the one to write Light's name on the Death Note). Ryuk adds "it would be hard to see you in prison and your life is over anyways" or something similar. After 40 seconds, Light dies in front of the two detective teams.

I don't agree, should be the other way around, meaning people should learn how to use the spoilers tag functionality of the forum, it's not that hard.
And I see anon shares my point of view about this one.

I find it pretty hard to avoid spoilers of tv shows for 10 years straight, though.
I have issues avoiding spoilers 3 days after release. Work, home, friends, reddit, ......... etc

I mean, I feel ya, and I even agree.

( But at the same time, I'm surprised there's people still watching 10 year old stuff for the first time right now; I always felt like this is highly unlikely )

notice that i wasn't against using spoilers

i was talking about opportunities (reducing attachment) arising from conflicts of opinion (in this case: regarding spoilers) and their connection to the nature of reality (repeating history)

the number of movies/series keeps increasing
many people don't share western (european) viewing habits
    curiosity of newer generations
    nostalgia of older generations
other causes of delay (wars, disasters, illness,...)

this means a greater number of missed releases, which could be revisited at a later date (for various reasons)

You won't have time to revisit because by then, a new and exciting show has been released and peer pressure will make you look at that instead.

if you're really interested, you'll adapt, 'make time' and prioritize; drop already stale shows more quickly than usual and the like

also, at a certain point peer pressure will lose its relevance

You'd think so, but reality has often shown otherwise.

I was going to write a small rant, but I think this list is pretty thorough.

Sometimes it's hard to draw the line between a spoiler and common knowledge; I mean, I think everyone who has posted above knows who Darth Vader, Tyler Durden or Keyser Soze are or what happens to Aeris, but what about those who don't? Better err on the side of caution (also known as not doing what hellman does ).
