Thread: The Chat/Spam Thread

Groups start and stop. It's just life. People grow up. I don't think ONE group of the ones I started watching first, years ago, is still subbing. Man, who remembers Shinsen-subs? Back then I felt like they were the biggest thing ever and they'd never go away. Boy was I wrong. Horriblesubs wasn't even a thing back then. They really did build up a glorious amount of high quality subs tho. Ironic how their name kept me away at first.

I think it's mostly that a lot of younger either japanese people or others that are studying japanese in school are in these subbing groups, either out of love of spreading the culture or to practice. At one point you're suddenly 32 with kids and you don't have the time to keep that up.

Shinsen-subs had their first anime subbed in 2003. That's a wopping 18 years ago. If these dudes were 20 at the time, they'd be 38 now. (Horrible started in 2009, which is still 12 years)

Indeed, as a certain visual novel protagonist said, there are too many responsibilities in this world... but even in an hypothetical scenario where you've got none, I can think of additional factors.
    • Drama: e-fights with other groups or within your own over stuff that is usually stupid in hindsight. The longer you run for and the more people you've associated with, the higher the odds you've been involved in (or dragged into) that sort of thing.
    • Legal trouble: even if copyright enforcement of non-licensed anime outside Japan is rare, the risk is never zero and that may put people off from doing this long-term.
    • Burnout: you can love this stuff and dive into it head on at first, but after years, it can end up feeling like a chore, with you wanting to move on to other things.

And as I said before, just because a group shuts down, it doesn't mean everyone who was in it will retire from the scene forever... just as I'm sure it's also possible to have plenty of turnover within a group without ever dissolving it.

As for how many Japanese people are involved into fansubbing, that's a good question! I'd wager most won't want to get involved due to the aforementioned copyright issues, but there must be at least a few.

Same here, and it also happened with Loe Quality Translations. Then I realized that if the groups themselves chose those names, they couldn't be anything other than humor

The dilemma of being a habitual cheater is even though some other tracker members we see every day and are familiar with, but we can't talk to them, let them familiar with us too or hang out with them like friends. The more info we expose (even if merely which sites we are on), the more those info will have potential to connect with each other and bite us the day one of the accounts gets banned. a bit bitter have to say. always need to shut the mouth and keep low profile, have less chance to make friends in tracker circle.

For the record, there weren't any shared accounts in BugMeNot or Login2. And you could have told us what tutorial you were looking for, it might have been available elsewhere

As soon as you realize these are places to get files and not social networking sites, this "problem" will disappear. Also, as someone who has been involved in the community aspect of torrenting for a long time and even used to post on tracker forums regularly, I can safely say things really went downhill in the last ten years or so. Not worth the risk, even as a completely legitimate user.

I agree, it's probably the last place I'll look for friends. I'm all for friends but I'll probably like people on forums like this a lot better than a random tracker forum

Two computer repair jobs this week. When I told my customer her HP Mini wasn't worth wasting money on because 1. it's very old (1 GB of RAM), 2. the hard disk is completely damaged and 3. the screen hinge is broken, she told me I could keep it for myself, charger and all Maybe I can swap the disk, remove the screen and turn it into a headless torrent box? The thing really is "mini", the size of a small book.

lol lucky, nice catch. Sounds like a headless box would definitely work out.

I took some time yesterday night to open it up, clean it, and remove the screen, hard disk and WLAN card. Now I only need to add a replacement disk, repaste the processor, and reassemble everything back. Torrent box, media server or NAS... the first one would be most useful to me, but in principle any of them could work out with a lightweight system.

Depends on how you define media server I guess and what will be on it exactly
